Be part of one of Europe's most advanced research facilities. We are now seeking several team members for our Remote Handling team within Target Operations & Maintenance. The team is responsible for operation, maintenance, and further development of equipment used to transport and handle radioactive components and waste. At ESS, we have "Active Cells Facility" which are specially designed areas for safe remote handling of radioactive waste. To transport the material, specialized transport equipment called "Cask Assemblies" (CA) is used. Here you will work with advanced remotely controlled systems, heavy lifting, VR-supported operations, and complex electromechanical systems in a unique technical environment. This is a role for you who enjoys practical technical work, problem-solving, and advanced equipment – and who wants to work with international colleagues in a high-tech environment. Our remote handling systems are designed for environments where people cannot work directly on-site. As a technician in remote operations and robotics, you will be involved in preparing, operating, maintaining, and developing systems used to handle radioactive components and waste – both manually and via remote control. You will work with, among other things: Telemanipulators and haptic robotic systems. Remotely operated traverses and lifting systems. Remotely operated cutting and processing equipment. Custom-designed transport containers for radioactive waste. Camera and VR-supported operations. Complex electromechanical systems. Specialized tools and inspection equipment for remote handling. You will be an important part of commissioning, further developing, and maintaining systems to ensure high availability and safe operation in one of Europe's most advanced technical environments. Your main responsibilities: Provide technical support in developing work instructions and risk assessments Participate in commissioning, testing, maintenance, and modifications Operate and maintain specialized remote handling equipment Troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical systems Collaborate with engineers to improve equipment reliability and maintainability Develop and update technical documentation and maintenance instructions Support workshop and manufacturing activities as needed Contribute to safe working practices in radiation protection classified environments Participate in planning major lifting and maintenance operations This is not a typical operator role. You will work with technology and systems designed for locations where direct human access is not possible. The role combines precision mechanics, robotics, remote control, maintenance strategy, heavy mechanical systems, and new technology such as VR-supported handling. We are looking for someone who is practical, technically curious, and comfortable with problem-solving and teamwork in complex technical environments. You need: At least 3 years of experience from a technical role in industry, operation, or maintenance. Experience working in regulated or safety-controlled operations. Good mechanical or electromechanical understanding. Experience working from drawings and technical documentation. Experience with assembly, testing, commissioning, or maintenance of industrial equipment. Experience with technical documentation and maintenance instructions. Experience with safe use of workshop machinery and tools. Good English language skills, both spoken and written. It is advantageous if you have experience with: Remote handling systems or robotics. Nuclear technology operations or other safety-critical areas. Heavy lifting or traverse systems. PLC troubleshooting or control systems. Machining, CNC, welding, or workshop work.
