What does a train traffic controller do?
This is a profession for you who like to keep control of the situation and where no two days are the same. You work on-site at the traffic control center together with experienced colleagues with the shared goal of ensuring that both freight and passengers arrive safely and on time. To succeed, collaboration, community, and teamwork are extremely important. The work is performed via computer and telephone and your decisions affect thousands of travelers every day.
Working as a train traffic controller involves, among other things:
- Managing and monitoring railway traffic in real-time, 24/7 throughout the year.
- Handling disruptions and delays, prioritizing and making decisions that affect railway traffic.
- Following regulations and safety procedures for safe railway operations.
- Collaborating with colleagues at the traffic control center, customers, train drivers, and emergency services.
- Working shifts according to a rotating schedule.
Qualifications
What is required to become a train traffic controller?
This role suits you if you have strong analytical skills and approach problems in a structured and solution-oriented way. As a person, you are stable and easily adjust your pace when things happen. You keep calm and make well-founded independent decisions even in high-pressure situations. You have high safety awareness, are thorough, take responsibility for your tasks and your learning. You are a team player who communicates clearly and values collaboration. Your ability to apply theory to practice is crucial for successfully completing the basic training.
To become a train traffic controller, you must:
- Have completed upper secondary school or have equivalent knowledge from other studies (e.g., folk high school, adult education, vocational training).
- Have a valid driving license for a car.
- Have good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish.
- Be able and willing to work shifts (day, evening, night, weekends, and public holidays).
It is an advantage but not a requirement if you have:
- Experience working with rapid pace changes.
- Experience working in a role where it has been important to follow procedures and regulations.
- Experience in a role where safety has been in focus.
- Experience in work where you have communicated verbally by telephone and digitally via computer.
Other Information
Shift Work
All train traffic controllers work alternating day, evening, night, weekend, and public holiday shifts according to a rotating schedule. It is important that you consider your ability to work shifts before submitting your application.
Basic Training and Trainee Employment
You will be employed as a trainee with trainee salary (approximately 25,000 - 28,000 kr per month) and will undergo approximately one year of paid training starting in week 5 in January 2027. The training consists of 7 weeks of theoretical courses on-site at the Traffic School in Ängelholm as well as practical training at your traffic control center. About the Recruitment Process
Several elements of the recruitment process will require your physical presence as a candidate, which means that in certain recruitment stages you may need to take leave from any job or studies to continue participating in the recruitment process.
Recruitment day, which includes work tests and work-related exercises, will be held in person in Hallsberg week 37, September 9, 11, and 12.
Individual psychological assessment will be conducted digitally in weeks 39-41.
Final interviews are planned to be conducted digitally in weeks 39-41.
