Gävle is a municipality with high ambitions in sustainable urban development, architectural quality, and attractive living environments. We are now seeking a city architect who wants to help shape the city's development and contribute to a long-term sustainable and well-designed built environment.
As a city architect, you work strategically and long-term with architecture and design issues while providing support and guidance on concrete projects and matters. Here you have the opportunity to influence the municipality's development together with engaged colleagues, residents, businesses, and political representatives.
The position is located in the Building and Environment Department within the Living Environments Sector. Building and Environment consists of five units: Planning, Building Permits, Environment and Health, Municipal Land Survey Authority, and Mapping, Measurement, and GIS.
Job Responsibilities
In your role as city architect, you are responsible for providing support, coordinating, and driving architecture and design issues within the municipality with the aim of creating attractive, safe, and sustainable environments for the municipality's residents.
Your tasks include:
• Serving as expert competency in matters concerning design and architecture, including early stages, land allocations, urban development projects, and art projects
• Initiating, inspiring, and generating interest in architecture and design among residents, businesses, and political representatives through lectures, seminars, and media appearances
• Coordinating the municipality's architecture award
• Ensuring that the municipality's architecture policy is current and followed
• Participating in the municipality's comprehensive planning
• Providing support in planning and building permit matters of significant public interest from a design and architectural perspective
As a city architect, you are also responsible for coordinating, driving, and developing collaboration between architects within the Living Environments Sector.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for someone who has:
• Architectural education from a college or university
• Good knowledge of planning and building regulations
• Several years of experience as an architect
It is a merit if you have experience in designing and projecting buildings and have worked within municipal operations.

You have a well-developed sense for good design and can see quality at different scales—from the city's overall structure and urban spaces to the individual building's details.
As a city architect, you have an important strategic and guiding role. You are driven and proactive, take responsibility for advancing design issues, and dare to make clear and well-founded decisions.
You are receptive and skilled at building trusting relationships through dialogue with consultants, developers, politicians, and colleagues. You contribute to shared vision and quality in the city's development.
You are creative and solution-oriented with the ability to inspire others and create engagement and participation in architecture and design matters.
You communicate clearly and have strong abilities to express yourself both verbally and in writing. You adapt your communication to your audience and context.
