Tjärnö Marine Laboratory together with R/V Skagerak is part of Gothenburg University's marine infrastructure. The laboratory is located one mile outside Strömstad in northern Bohuslän adjacent to Kosterhavet National Park. It is a large and modern research station with various facilities for experimental work indoors and outdoors, advanced laboratories, a smaller research vessel R/V Nereus, several smaller boats and underwater vessels, as well as teaching facilities, offices and meeting rooms. The station also has a restaurant and accommodation with capacity for 100 people, and a marine aquarium. Approximately 40 researchers from Gothenburg University have their permanent workplace at Tjärnö, and many researchers from other universities in Sweden and abroad visit the station each year. In addition to research, education is a major part of the activities at Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, and many students from Gothenburg University, other universities and secondary schools come to the station for shorter or longer stays. Collaboration is also an important task with a public aquarium, marine biology excursions and popular science lectures. The station has technical staff of approximately 18 people working with various functions that provide support and service to researchers and students at the station: technicians, captains, receptionist, cooks, custodians, and information officers and a communications officer. Job Responsibilities You will be captain of Nereus and Doris, and together with the rest of the crew be responsible for the vessels, their operation and the advanced sampling equipment used. It is important that safety on board is maintained at a high level. Other technical tasks may also occur. Over the coming years we are planning for a new research vessel to replace our 16 m long Nereus. As captain you will be involved in the planning and design work of this new vessel. Qualifications You must have Basic Safety Training, officer certification Class VI, valid seafarer's medical certificate, and valid ROC certificate. You must also have CCM crisis management training, medical care training or maritime medical training for handling the ship's pharmacy D, and SSO is desirable. It is desirable if you have experience and knowledge of handling CTD, various water samplers, scrapers and dredges. As a person you are responsive to the needs of research and education during sampling and research assignments. You have a good ability to collaborate with different professions in an international environment. The workplace is difficult to reach by public transport; it would be helpful if you have your own vehicle. Work is primarily during daytime, but evening and weekend work occurs.
