Postdoctoral Researcher in Gear Technology – From Manufacturing to Performance
Responsibilities We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher in mechanical elements and production development with a focus on how manufacturing methods and manufacturing variations affect gear performance. The project is interdisciplinary and carried out in collaboration between research in design, materials engineering, lightweight construction, and production development. You will plan and conduct experimental studies in FZG test rigs, characterize gear geometry and surface properties, and investigate how these affect efficiency, wear, and service life. The project also covers alternative gear materials and manufacturing methods, such as powder metallurgical gears, as well as new lubrication strategies such as grease in precision applications. A particular focus is to understand how variations in geometry and surface affect gear function and how high efficiency can be balanced against long service life. The goal is to create a stronger scientific connection between manufacturing and component performance and contribute to innovative gear design, energy-efficient drivetrains, and production excellence. The postdoctoral researcher will be affiliated with XPRES – Centre of Excellence in Production Research, which is a long-term national initiative in production research bringing together XPRES KTH, MDU, RISE, and Swerim. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be part of this dynamic research environment, with the opportunity to work interdisciplinarily and closely with both academia and industry. Qualifications Requirements A completed doctoral degree or equivalent foreign qualification as assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled no later than when the employment decision is made. Meritorious At the final application deadline, no more than three years since completion of a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign qualification as assessed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Experience with experimental testing (surface fatigue and efficiency testing) using an FZG test rig or similar test rig for gears. Experience in designing gears. Experience with geometry measurement and surface characterization of gears. You can communicate scientific results orally and in writing in Swedish and English. Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality. We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. Become Part of KTH KTH shapes the future through education, research, and innovation. As a leading international technical university, we play an active role in driving and contributing to the transition to a sustainable society. Application You apply through KTH's recruitment system. As an applicant, you have primary responsibility for ensuring your application is complete when submitted. The application should include: CV including relevant work experience and knowledge. Copy of degree certificate and transcript from your previous university studies. Translations to English or Swedish if the original documents are not issued in one of these languages. A brief account of why you wish to conduct research, your academic interests, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals. Maximum 2 pages long. The application must be received by KTH no later than the final application deadline at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time). About the Employment The employment is permanent, but no longer than two years. A postdoctoral position is a time-limited merit-based employment primarily focused on research intended as a first career step after doctoral defense.
