Job Responsibilities
Do you want to use data and modeling to make historic buildings energy-efficient while preserving their cultural heritage value? Join the DASHER research project at KTH.
DASHER (Data-Driven Structured Historical Energy Renovations) develops and implements interdisciplinary, data-driven methods for energy renovation of culturally valuable buildings, with an initial focus on Gamla stan in Stockholm. Based on the EU's updated Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), the project addresses the challenge of balancing energy efficiency, conservation requirements, and good indoor environmental quality.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will further develop and apply tools for district-level energy modeling (such as ODEN and HIBER Atlas) to automate energy simulations and identify cost-effective measures at the district scale. You will work with open and physics-based building stock data, validate models against real buildings, and translate results into a scalable method for Swedish conditions, a portfolio of measures for Gamla stan, and guidance to national authorities for implementing the EPBD in culturally sensitive environments.
You will become part of a strong interdisciplinary consortium spanning academia, industry, and the public sector, and collaborate closely with project partners including Uppsala University. The position is located at the Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Technology (SEED), School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE), KTH, in Stockholm.
Qualifications
Required
Completed doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. This requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made.
Doctoral degree in energy systems, building/civil engineering, building physics, environmental engineering, or related field.
Documented experience with building energy simulation and/or urban building energy modeling (UBEM).
Strong programming and data analysis skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or equivalent).
Excellent English language skills, both spoken and written, as required in daily work.
As a person, you are collaborative and self-driven.
Meritorious
No more than three years since obtaining your doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, as of the final application deadline.
Experience with energy efficiency improvements or renovation of culturally valuable buildings.
Experience with physics-based modeling of building stock and working with open and geographic (GIS) data.
Experience with hygrothermal assessment, indoor climate, and moisture risk assessment in buildings.
Documented scientific publications.
Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams with industry and public sector partners.
Familiarity with the Swedish building stock and regulatory framework; knowledge of Swedish is meritorious.
Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality.
We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
