Project Description
This project aims to investigate the structure of nanoporous materials and their interaction with guest molecules in the material's pores to gain a deeper understanding of their chemical properties. Over the past decade, electron crystallographic methods such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and imaging techniques in aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy have evolved into a toolkit that has expanded the boundaries of our understanding of their structures.
Material properties are determined by their structures at the atomic and molecular scale, and their selectivity as catalysts and adsorbents is largely governed by the structure and chemical functionality. In this project, we will use and develop advanced techniques based on transmission electron microscopy, such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and phase-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) for structural analysis of nanoporous materials such as zeolites, MOFs, and others at the atomic scale.
The postdoctoral fellow will work in the research group of Assistant Professor Tom Willhammar (www.willhammargroup.com).
Job Responsibilities
The project aims to implement and develop protocols for structural investigation of nanoporous materials such as zeolites and MOFs at the atomic scale, including defects and guest molecules. For this purpose, the candidate will use electron crystallographic techniques, such as three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED/MicroED) and STEM imaging. The project includes development of protocols for collection and analysis of electron microscopy data and their applications for investigating atomic structures of nanoporous materials.
Qualifications Required
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral fellow, a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree is required. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made.
Assessment Criteria
It is meritorious if the doctoral degree or equivalent has been completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, an earlier completed degree may also be considered meritorious. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
In the appointment process, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence and research skills relevant to this project. We seek an excellent candidate with previous experience in structure characterization, including transmission electron microscopy and crystallography as well as nanoporous materials. Knowledge of aberration-corrected (S)TEM, 3D electron diffraction, zeolites, or MOFs is advantageous. Demonstrated experience with advanced (S)TEM techniques such as 4D STEM, integrated differential phase-contrast (iDPC), cryo-EM, and/or ptychography is meritorious. Experience with scientific programming and/or familiarity with beam-sensitive samples is an asset. In view of the international collaborations involved in this project, excellent communication skills both written and oral are important.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date by agreement.
