The faculty has three departments with a total of approximately 500 employees. The Department of Engineering Science encompasses large parts of the university's bachelor's and master's engineering programs in energy engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and industrial systems. Internationally recognized research is conducted here with a focus on future energy and industrial systems. Employment Information Type of Employment: Fixed-term employment, 2 years Employment Period/Start Date: By agreement Full-time Number of Positions: 1 Application Deadline: 2026-08-20 Work Location: Västerås Department: Engineering Science Job Responsibilities A postdoctoral position is designed to provide an opportunity to develop independence as a researcher after completing a doctoral degree and to create conditions for further qualification. The position can be fixed-term for a maximum of 3 years. The position primarily involves research where the candidate will independently plan and conduct scientific studies within energy and environmental engineering. The position will be conducted within the research profile FEC (Future Energy Center), which means that the work takes place in close collaboration with industrial partners and other researchers within the profile. Future Energy conducts research in the following areas: Renewable energy with a focus on solar and bioenergy and the integration of renewable energy in the energy system Resource efficiency with a focus on energy efficiency, low emissions, and recovery of nutrients and materials Digitalization for energy efficiency and improved environmental performance The postdoctoral researcher is expected to take initiative, be creative, and take responsibility. Additionally, the work tasks interact closely with industrial partners. Therefore, the applicant must have strong collaboration skills. The researcher also needs to be able to disseminate and communicate scientific results and knowledge within existing and new networks, which includes academia, industry, and society at large. Research results will be presented at project meetings, conferences, and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to take personal responsibility for planning and conducting your studies, take your own initiative to develop your ideas and knowledge, and be able to collaborate with others both within and outside academia. Teaching or other assignments may be part of the position up to a maximum of 20%. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will also be part of the Future Energy research group, where you are expected to contribute to the development of the group. Qualifications We are seeking someone who has completed a doctoral degree in energy engineering no more than three years before the application deadline. You must not have previously held a postdoctoral position in the same or related subject area at MDU for more than one year. The applicant should demonstrate research experience in national and/or international projects within process modeling and simulations, including both steady-state and dynamic modeling and techno-economic analysis, as well as strong knowledge of written and spoken English. The applicant should demonstrate good collaboration skills, the ability to organize and conduct work tasks independently, experience with or openness to interdisciplinary work, and a solutions-oriented approach. Evaluation Criteria For this position, particular weight will be placed on: Solid knowledge of thermal conversion of biomass, such as gasification and pyrolysis Strong programming skills in MATLAB, Aspen Plus, Modelica, etc. Solid knowledge of data-driven methods for modeling and optimization Solid knowledge of AI Experience with scientific publications beyond your dissertation Experience in writing project proposals and leading projects In an overall assessment of suitability, personal qualities will also be considered.
