The department's primary task is to create legal conditions enabling the Swedish Police Authority to prevent, investigate, and combat crime as well as maintain order and security through qualified legal support, guidance, and oversight. The Legal Department is responsible for providing legal support to police regions and national divisions. The assignment covers legal matters within areas such as crime prevention, order and security, administrative law, data protection, and public access and confidentiality. The department also handles authority decisions regarding disclosure of public records, certain court proceedings, damages and compensation matters, as well as support in developing governance documents and legal oversight. The Swedish Police Authority operates in a time when crime is becoming increasingly digital, international, and complex. At the same time, the importance of technology, information management, and artificial intelligence for the police's ability to prevent, investigate, and combat crime is growing. In this development, the Legal Department plays a strategically important role. Legal expertise needs to be close to operations and contribute to solutions that combine operational needs, technological development, and legal governance. Your role as head of the Legal Department As chief legal officer and head of the Legal Department, you will be responsible for all activities conducted within the department. You report directly to the National Police Commissioner and are part of the Swedish Police Authority's strategic leadership group. This role entails significant responsibility and considerable opportunities to influence how operations are conducted and developed to achieve the authority's goals. As chief legal officer, you will lead one of the Swedish Police Authority's most important expert functions. You are responsible for ensuring that the Legal Department upholds legal certainty while legal expertise contributes to creating conditions for effective, modern, and appropriate police work. You will develop the Legal Department as a strategic partner to operations, where high legal quality is combined with operational understanding and a clear focus on finding solutions within the framework of legislation. Your responsibilities include: • Leading and developing the Legal Department and its operations • Ensuring that legal expertise is close to operations and contributing to solutions and opportunities within the law • Creating conditions for collaboration within the Swedish Police Authority and with other stakeholders • Ensuring progress on operationally critical matters and contributing to the authority's development with high legal quality • Driving the Legal Department's development of working methods in an era where digitalization, information management, and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly important • Promoting a culture characterized by accountability, learning, and courage to develop new working methods This is an opportunity for you if you have: • Several years of management experience driving and leading operations in complex organizations • Several years of experience working goal- and results-oriented with both overall operational assignments and your own area of responsibility, with good results • Experience successfully leading change and development initiatives • Served in a leadership group • Solid experience in crime-fighting operations • Experience translating legal requirements into operational development • A law degree • Swedish citizenship We consider it a merit if you also have: • Experience leading legal operations within the justice system • Experience leading development in complex knowledge or expert organizations • Management and leadership training When we hire, we will place great emphasis on personal qualities and leadership abilities.
