Gothenburg Museum of Art—one of the Nordic region's leading museums of fine art—is a much-beloved museum with internationally recognized collections, cutting-edge research and knowledge development, and innovative public programming. The iconic building on Götaplatsen will undergo a major renovation and expansion scheduled for 2029-2031. This will enable expanded and more accessible activities based on the museum's vision of ambitious art experiences with low barriers to entry for visitors. During the museum's closure, certain public programming will continue alongside internal preparation work for the reopening in 2032. Overall, this requires a leader who can build on the existing vision, prioritize effectively, and create stability during a period of significant change. In this role, you are responsible for: leading the museum's development and transformation at a strategic level through several years of change and renewal being the primary responsible person for the museum's brand and artistic direction based on the vision that more people can discover art and experience their museum and its collections through clear direction, stability, and calm, unleashing the strength and competence of employees working in broad collaboration within the Culture Administration, with the city, and with a range of external stakeholders actively seeking opportunities for external funding and strategic partnerships You will be supported by two experienced unit managers and a competent staff with great dedication. You lead the management team's work and have overall responsibility for the museum as a leader, operational representative, and employer representative. Responsibility for finances, operational planning, goal-setting and follow-up work, and systematic workplace environment management are included. In your role as museum director, you are the primary responsible person for the museum's tasks within the renovation and expansion project, with support from other relevant managers, a development leader, and a project coordinator. You are also an important part of the management team for Gothenburg's Museums and Art Hall—one of Sweden's largest museum organizations, responsible for Gothenburg Museum of Art, Gothenburg City Museum, Röhsska Museum, Maritime Museum Aquarium, and Gothenburg Art Hall. We work together on a range of major projects such as constructing shared storage facilities and deepening development work for more equitable access to our institutions. We also contribute to the city's overarching goals and the Culture Administration's collaborative work. Qualifications We are looking for someone with: experience in strategic management of museum operations or other cultural activities with documented strong results experience in change management and leading through managers an academic degree in art history or a related field that the employer deems equivalent good knowledge of both contemporary and historical art and a broad network within the art field knowledge of museums' societal mission and experience from practical museum work, including collaboration with external stakeholders experience working in a politically governed organization experience with union collaboration good knowledge of Swedish and English; additional language skills are meriting It is meriting if you have: leadership training experience with renovation or relocation projects experience with audience development work and broadened participation initiatives international experience We see that you are structured, solution-oriented, attentive, and unpretentious.
