The Center for Multilingualism works to give students the opportunity to receive instruction in their native language and study support in the language they master best. The program currently represents 38 different languages. We collaborate with both municipal and independent school administrators, from preschool through upper secondary school.
Students who have at least one guardian with a native language other than Swedish have the opportunity to study their language as a school subject. Through native language instruction, students strengthen their multilingualism, develop their identity, and build pride in their language and background.

Employment Information
This position is a fixed-term part-time role at 55%, with the possibility of adjustment. Planned start date August 17, 2026, through December 31, 2026.
Your Work Tasks
Working as a native language teacher is a dynamic and varied role where student demand guides planning. You visit different schools throughout the municipality—both in central locations and outlying areas—to meet students in their school environment.
Your responsibilities may include:
Native language instruction
Study support in the native language
Distance learning and distance support
Language support initiatives in collaboration with the Welcome Unit Hej Umeå
Native language instruction takes place in groups or individually within the municipality's schools, from preschool through grade 9, primarily in afternoons outside regular class schedules. Students in grades F–3 receive instruction at their home school, while students from grade 4 onwards may receive instruction at another school location. Bus passes are provided when travel between schools is needed. Distance learning may be offered for students in outlying areas from grade 2 onwards. The work is independent and includes planning, implementation, grading, and evaluation according to the Swedish curriculum.
Study support means you assist students in grades 1–9 and in the Language Introduction program in upper secondary school. Support may occur before, during, or after class time. You work closely with the mentor and subject teachers, who are responsible for planning, while you provide support in the native language to strengthen the student's knowledge development.
Support to the Hej Umeå Welcome Unit may be included when receiving newly arrived students, for example through information interviews and language assessment.

Requirements
Sinhala as your native language and documented proficiency in this language
Approved Swedish B/Swedish 2
Good digital skills
Teacher certification, Swedish or foreign—or alternatively, other pedagogical experience
Valid excerpt from the criminal record register, as required by the law on suitability checks
Meritorious
Knowledge of additional languages
