About the Swedish Correctional Service The Swedish Correctional Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more staff members. Our most important goal is to reduce reoffending – to break the cycle of crime. When we succeed, society becomes safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation services, detention facilities, and inmate transportation. The Stockholm East operations area comprises two closed prisons: Österåker and Täby. Our team primarily consists of correctional officers, but also care personnel, teachers, administrators, production managers, and other important professional groups. Inmates at the prisons are engaged in education, treatment programs, workshop activities, and assembly and packaging tasks – all to create structure, meaning, and conditions for a better future. Österåker Prison is in an exciting expansion phase with new prison spaces and activity facilities coming online between 2025 and 2027. Here you have excellent opportunities to grow with the organization – both in terms of staff numbers and in new, exciting roles. The prison is located outside Åkersberga – perfect if you want to avoid rush hour traffic. A car is the most convenient way to get here. Täby Prison is a smaller facility with a family-like environment and good commuting options. Both prisons offer staff parking. We value a health-promoting work environment – at Österåker Prison there is a staff gym. There is also an appreciated staff restaurant where you can eat and socialize with your colleagues. Job Description As a correctional officer, you are fundamental to security work. You work in a team with other professionals to maintain a safe and secure operation and to motivate inmates toward a life without crime. The role of correctional officer involves a structured and routine-based approach with risk assessment and security awareness in focus. Clear routines are a natural part of your daily work. You open cell doors in the morning and lock them in the evening. You escort inmates to work and education, conduct searches, and supervise recreation yards and exercise facilities. You have daily contact with inmates to understand how they are doing, and you are part of release preparation processes. The work is varied and there are many development opportunities for those who want to grow within the authority. Your trial employment is for six months and begins with three weeks of local induction at the workplace followed by work in your regular position for several months. During this period, we will also schedule when you will begin the Swedish Correctional Service's mandatory basic training. We conduct ongoing assessments of your work, and if everything goes well, your trial employment will transition to a permanent position after six months. Qualifications Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be confident, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need good teamwork skills and clear communication. It is important that you share the Swedish Correctional Service's fundamental values of a humane view of people, respect for the individual, and the belief that people can develop and change. The position requires good physical capability to handle situations that may arise at work and to perform the physical elements included in the training. We are looking for someone who has: Complete upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing Good computer skills It is meritorious if you have: Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management Work experience from corrections, service roles, security work, social services, psychiatry, or health and care work Language skills beyond Swedish Other Information The Swedish Correctional Service has chosen to eliminate the cover letter and replace it with selection questions relevant to the position.
