Job Description – Mountain Guide & Dog Handler Location: Sälen Employment Type: Fixed-term / Seasonal About the Role As a mountain guide and dog handler at Fjälläventyr, you are an important part of the whole – in the mountains, in the kennel, and in meeting our guests. The role combines guiding, practical work, and responsibility for our dogs, who are the heart of the operation. The work is varied, sometimes physically demanding, and takes place largely outdoors. For the right person, it is meaningful work with great responsibility, much joy, and a strong team around you. Prerequisites & Personal Qualities To thrive and function well in the role, we expect you to: Have a genuine interest in animals, especially dogs Enjoy physical work outdoors, in all weather and throughout different seasons Have the ability to handle work with sled dogs (up to approximately 60 kg) Be able to work both independently and together with others Have a strong sense of responsibility, structure, and order Be confident when meeting people and contribute to warm hospitality See yourself as an ambassador for Fjälläventyr and our values Have no issues with heavy lifting, cold winters, or working with frozen food Have a B driver's license and good driving experience Experience with trailers is a merit Have a snowmobile license or be willing to obtain one before the season. Cost approximately 4,000 kr (price estimate 2026) Be able to handle email and basic work in Word and Excel Live in Sälen or be willing to relocate Previous experience in guiding, animal care, or outdoor work is required. At the same time, we place great emphasis on attitude, ability to collaborate, and sense of responsibility. Dog Sledding – Training, Dog Knowledge & Methodology If you have no previous experience with dog sledding, internal training is included as part of the introduction. The training covers both practical and theoretical elements, including: At least 6 practical sessions with: Harnessing, positioning, and starting the team Driving the team in varying terrain Basic dog care: Feeding, rest, and recovery Simple observation of the dogs' health and well-being Dog psychology and pack behavior: Understanding of stress, calm, and signaling behaviors Pack dynamics and individual roles Methodology for calm, clear, and consistent handling Fjälläventyr's approach to leadership, relationship, and respect between human and dog Training and introduction are mandatory but not compensated. The goal is for you to feel confident and prepared before working independently. Safety & Preparedness Safety is a natural and important part of the work. Valid CPR and first aid certification is required If you lack this at the start, we offer the opportunity to complete training according to our guidelines You are expected to be able to act calmly and in an organized manner in: Accidents or falls Injuries to guests, colleagues, or dogs Rapid changes in weather or mountain conditions Routines and instructions from responsible management must always be followed Job Responsibilities Job responsibilities vary by season and may include: Guiding and assisting with dog sledding tours and other mountain adventures such as paddling, climbing, and mountain hiking Daily care, feeding, and cleaning of the kennel Guest reception and hospitality in the dog park and facility Trail marking and preparation for tours Maintenance and service of equipment Simple carpentry and practical improvement work Support during events, activities, and tours Basic logistics for equipment and transportation Working Hours & Seasonal Variation Working hours vary throughout the season: During certain periods, you work longer hours Other periods are quieter Over the season, working hours average approximately 150 hours per month Flexibility and understanding of seasonal variations are a natural part of working with us.
