The Department of Linguistics and Philology conducts research and education in linguistics and text studies with a focus on Asian languages and cultures, Europe's classical languages, linguistics, and computational linguistics. Education is offered at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The Department has about seventy employees who, together with students and collaborating partners, create an international and intellectually vibrant environment. Uppsala University is one of few institutions in the world that conducts research in language standardization and development of digital resources for Balochi.
Job Duties
The work duties consist mainly of developing resources for the standardized Balochi written language, Modern Standard Balochi. This specifically involves:
standardizing spelling and grammar in Balochi short stories and poems (Arabic and Latin script)
translating Balochi short stories and poems into English
creating a comprehensive parallel corpus for Balochi-English that will serve as the foundation for machine translation
grammatically annotating Balochi data for morphological analysis
expanding the vocabulary in an online Balochi-English dictionary
contributing to creating a preprocessing pipeline for Balochi for further language technology analysis
Qualification Requirements
The position requires strong proficiency in both Modern Standard Balochi and English, and documented ability to write high-quality texts in both languages and to translate between the two languages.
Desirable/Meritorious Qualifications
Experience as an author in Balochi or as a translator of Balochi/English, as well as lexicographical work on Balochi-English, is meritorious. It is equally meritorious to have worked with grammatical annotation of Standard Balochi texts, but training in this task will be provided during the course of work. Previous experience in text editing and/or book publishing in Standard Balochi is also valuable.
