The Faculty of Arts and Humanities announces 5–6 positions for doctoral students.
The doctoral positions are available in one or more of the following subjects:
archaeology,
library and information science,
english,
film studies,
history,
art and visual studies,
literary studies,
musicology,
religion,
swedish language with focus on linguistics.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, which is one of Linnaeus University's five faculties, is a dynamic, flexible and international knowledge environment with both scientific and artistic activities in a large number of subjects. We build complete academic environments where the exchange between teaching, research and collaboration creates momentum for the quality of the university and the surrounding society. The Faculty has seven departments and one institute. Doctoral education is conducted at five of the departments. Subject area for the position: archaeology, library and information science, english, history, film studies, art and visual studies, literary studies, musicology, religion or swedish language.
The subjects english, history, literary studies, swedish language can be studied with a didactic focus.
The subjects english and swedish language can be studied with a focus on multilingualism or linguistic focus.
The subject english can be studied with a literary focus.
Placement location until further notice: Placement location Kalmar or Växjö. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the locations occurs.
Scope of employment and time period: The employment is time-limited according to HF Chapter 5 § 7 corresponding to a maximum of four years of full-time studies. The scope is full-time.
Start date: February 1, 2027.
Job description
As a doctoral student, you will undergo doctoral education leading to a doctoral degree corresponding to a maximum of four years of full-time studies. You will follow the general study plan of your subject and have your employment at the department where your subject is located. See the subjects' websites. Depending on your research focus, you also have the opportunity to participate in one of the faculty's interdisciplinary research environments.
The Higher Education Ordinance stipulates that a person employed as a doctoral student should primarily devote themselves to their own education. However, an employee may, to a limited extent, work with education, research and administration. Such work may not, before the doctoral degree has been completed, exceed 20% of full working hours.
The person who is employed is expected to spend most of their working time at Linnaeus University's campus in Växjö or Kalmar, except for periods when the research task requires absence (for example archive trips/fieldwork/conferences).
Eligibility requirements
Basic eligibility is, according to Chapter 7 Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance, held by a person who has:
obtained a degree at advanced level,
completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
in another way, in Sweden or abroad, acquired equivalent knowledge.
The institution may grant an exception to the requirement for basic eligibility for an individual applicant if there are special reasons.
Specific eligibility is held by a person who has:
120 higher education credits in the current subject, or related subject, or equivalent knowledge
of which 30 higher education credits at advanced level, of which at least 15 higher education credits is independent work
good knowledge of Swedish and/or English.
Assessment criteria
The assessment of the applicant's ability to complete education at research level is made through a compilation that takes into account the following:
The dissertation plan's relevance, originality and feasibility during four years of full-time education.
The scientific skill documented in scientific works, particularly with regard to the quality of the degree work at advanced level, and other scientific works.
The breadth and composition of the basic degree and the picture the reviewing group receives of the applicant's ability to benefit from education at research level.
Weight will be given to personal suitability.
Application
The application is written in Swedish or English. It begins with a clear indication of which subject you are applying for doctoral education, and should consist of the following documents:
A personal letter in which you explain why you are applying for doctoral education.
Your CV (maximum two pages).
Certified copies of credentials showing that you meet the eligibility requirements for the doctoral student position.
A research plan (maximum 12,000 characters excluding references). The plan should contain the following parts: a) an introductory popular science summary/abstract of maximum 2,000 characters b) purpose and objectives, c) research questions, d) theoretical framework, e) method and timeline.
A copy of your degree work at advanced level or equivalent.
Names and contact details for up to two people who have agreed to serve as your references.
