PhD Student in Condensed Matter Theory
Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan · Full-time
Teknikringen 8, plan 5, Stockholm, Sweden
Project Description Doctoral Field: Physics Egor Babaev's group at the Department of Physics at KTH has an opening for a PhD student in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics. The group conducts a broad spectrum of research using analytical and numerical methods, ranging from effective field theory, topological systems, topological solitons, and statistical mechanical descriptions of phase transitions to modern microscopic quantum many-body techniques. One of our research areas is the emerging field of new types of order: In recent years, experimental discoveries have been made that have revised half-century-old paradigms: the discovery of electron quartet condensates and topological defects that carry an arbitrary fraction of magnetic flux quantum. The discovery has opened up many fundamental questions about the nature of this new state of matter and its possible applications. Other areas of study include new symmetry-breaking quantum states and topological ordered states, unconventional phase transitions, and the use of newly developed techniques such as diagrammatic Monte Carlo to understand other unsolved problems. Collaboration with international theoretical and experimental research groups involved in the project is encouraged. Supervision: Professor Egor Babaev is proposed to supervise the PhD student. The decision will be made at admission. Eligibility for Admission To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility: completed a degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at advanced level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement of English equivalent to English B/6. Selection To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. When selecting applicants, the ability to: independently advance your work, collaborate with others, have a professional approach, and analyze and work with complex issues will be assessed. After eligibility requirements are met, great weight will be placed on personal qualities. Target Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Information About Admission and Employment Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as a PhD student. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD student may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain work tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD student applies for a maximum of one year; the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. As a PhD student, you will receive KTH's employment benefits and have a monthly salary according to KTH's agreement for PhD student salaries. Read more about Doctoral Studies at KTH | KTH | Sweden.
