About the Position
The Laboratory for Sensorimotor Functions of the Brain, Department of Experimental Medical Science, investigates neurophysiological aspects of how the brain functions. This is conducted using advanced neurophysiological methods and sophisticated mathematical analysis of data. We use this to make predictions of disease progression in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. The workplace consists of two different research groups, both working in neurophysiology, with a combined total of 10-15 people. These individuals create a highly interdisciplinary environment, encompassing mathematics, computer science, psychiatry, neurology, and psychology. The climate is very collegial and stimulating for various types of discussions, and all professional roles interact freely. Additionally, we offer an extensive network of contacts with research industry and leading European universities such as École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna Pisa, and Technical University of Munich.
Project Description
The laboratory has been a coordinator for several major EU projects, see intutive-itn.eu and ph-coding.eu. These demonstrate the laboratory's highly interdisciplinary research, with significant components in computer science, mathematics, and industry.
Responsibilities and Duties
The main responsibilities for a PhD student are to engage in your research training, and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
The primary task is to conduct neurophysiological research to improve predictions of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and other disorders. Your duties also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however no more than 20% of your working time.
Qualifications
Requirements for admission are:
A completed degree at an advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or knowledge acquired in some other way within or outside the country substantially equivalent to the above
Good ability to benefit from research training
Requirements for employment are:
A degree in civil engineering (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, or physics
Good knowledge of linear algebra
Good knowledge of multivariable analysis
Ability to work independently
Collaboration skills
Merits that would strengthen your candidacy include prior experience with:
Analysis of neurophysiological data
Working with analysis of dynamic properties of brain activity in time series from spatially separated EEG channels
Applying optical flow analysis
Applying principal component analysis to multi-channel activity data
Pedagogical ability
Great emphasis will be placed on how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the research training.

About the Employment
The position is a fixed-term employment for a total of four years, 100%, with a start date of September 1, 2026, or by agreement. The general rule is that employment at Lund University is conducted in Sweden, so you are expected to be able to perform your work on-site in Lund.

PhD students follow a special salary scale tied to each faculty, and salary is set according to the current salary scale.
