PhD Student in Education with Focus on Adult Learning

We are now seeking two PhD students in Education with a focus on adult learning, positioned at the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Learning. Your Tasks Adult learning encompasses a wide range of knowledge areas, including adult learning occurring at different stages of the life cycle, organizational, institutional, and didactic questions in relation to municipal adult education, folk high schools, vocational education, and popular education more broadly. Also included are questions about adult study participation, social inclusion and exclusion of various groups in formal, non-formal, and informal learning contexts, transitions between education, work, and social life, and matters of employability. The two positions aim to strengthen research on municipal adult education, in relation to which the PhD students will formulate their research interests. As a PhD student, you are expected to contribute to the development of the broader research environment. This includes, among other things, thesis work, teaching, and participation in shared activities. The position requires significant presence at the workplace, which contributes to a vibrant intellectual climate. As a PhD student, you will engage in your research training and research projects in which you participate. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time. Your Qualifications You hold a degree at the advanced level in education or a subject of central importance to adult learning, or have completed courses of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in education or a subject of central importance to adult learning, or have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. Good knowledge of Swedish and English is a requirement for employment. You must be able to work both independently and in teams. A statement of intent of 3 pages must be submitted with your application. This should outline your research interests within adult learning with a focus on municipal adult education. Your Workplace The positions are placed at https://liu.se/organisation/liu/ibl/pvl, which has a strong international and national profile in terms of education, research, and publishing. Research within the environment aims to build knowledge about the following central adult education contexts: municipal adult education (including Swedish for immigrants [sfi] and vocational adult education), folk high schools, universities of applied sciences, and study associations' activities directed toward adults. With regard to vocational education, research is also directed toward upper secondary school vocational programs. About the Employment Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to doctoral training. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. Under special circumstances, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and the employment will thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on progress achieved in your study plan.
