Description of the workplace We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student for a research project focusing on studying and counteracting age-related blood diseases. The research group is housed within the Department of Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy and is part of Lund Stem Cell Center. The department has a strong research focus on hematopoiesis in mice and humans, both during development and in adulthood, with the goal of translating research results into a clinical context. Tasks and responsibilities In addition to following the study plan for doctoral education and participating in relevant courses, the following work tasks are included: Handling and preparation of bone marrow and blood from mice and humans for analysis Flow cytometry and FACS ELISA and other analyses for protein quantification Cell culture of blood stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and organoids Work with laboratory mice (breeding, euthanasia, injections, sampling, genotyping) Bioinformatic analysis of data from flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, and sequencing Ongoing compilation of work and presentation of data to participating researchers. The PhD student shall actively participate in local and international seminars, meetings, and relevant conferences and present the project at these in accordance with the study plan. Work with animal models is included. The PhD student is individually responsible for: Formulating relevant research questions Planning and conducting relevant experiments Making contact with colleagues who best support discussion of the results Finding paths for career support Formulating, developing, and optimizing communication pathways with supervisors and colleagues that best promote the PhD student's work methods and tasks. Requirements for employment are: Master's degree in biotechnology or equivalent Education in laboratory animal science (LAS) Formal education in flow cytometry and FACS as well as extensive experience with multiparameter flow cytometry Experience working with laboratory animals, specifically extraction and preparation of hematological tissues (e.g., blood, bone marrow) from mice Extensive experience with cell culture, particularly modern techniques for culturing blood stem cells and mesenchymal cells Good knowledge in analyzing flow cytometry data in FlowJo Experience with bioinformatic analysis of mass spectrometry data Experience with programming language R or similar Experience with ELISA analyses Documented good knowledge of scientific English Very strong ability to work independently. Since the research group has an international environment, you must have good communication skills and be skilled at collaboration. Additionally, the work tasks require you to be organized and have the ability to prioritize your work. Other information The employment is time-limited to four years full-time according to HF 5 chap 7§ with desired start date of October 1, 2026, or by agreement. Eligibility Basic eligibility for education at the research level is held by those who have: completed a degree at advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. Assessment criteria Provisions for employment as a PhD student are found in Ordinance SFS 1998:80. As a holder, only those admitted to education at the research level may be appointed. In appointment, primary attention shall be paid to the degree of ability to benefit from research education. In addition to the obligation to pursue own research education, the holder may be required to perform service pertaining to education, research, and administrative work according to special provisions in the ordinance.
