The Faculty of Law is now announcing one or two doctoral positions in Financial Law, International Private Law, Constitutional Law, or Procedural Law The field of Financial Law encompasses the study of national and international legal issues concerning direct and indirect taxes and mandatory fees paid to the state and municipalities, such as employer contributions and tariffs. The field of International Private Law covers the part of Swedish law that regulates the choice of legal rules in disputes of an international character, court jurisdiction, and enforcement of judgments. The field of Constitutional Law encompasses the legal foundation of Swedish democratic governance, including the exercise of power in Parliament, Government, and public agencies, the legislative process, and control of public authority. The field of Procedural Law in this announcement focuses on Swedish civil procedure law, which concerns how disputes are resolved in court or through alternative dispute resolution. The research project should be relevant to one of the research environments within these fields of study. Duties According to Chapter 5, Section 2 of the Higher Education Ordinance (HF), a person employed as a doctoral candidate shall primarily pursue their own education. However, a doctoral candidate may engage in a limited capacity in teaching, research, and administration. Such work must not exceed 20 percent of full-time employment before the doctoral degree has been obtained. The Faculty's researchers and teachers are expected to contribute to a vibrant research environment and the Faculty's other activities, and shall primarily conduct their work at the workplace. Qualifications Only persons who have been admitted or are being admitted to doctoral-level education at a university may be employed as doctoral candidates (Chapter 5, Section 3 HF). Basic eligibility for doctoral-level education is held by those who have Completed a degree at advanced level, Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at advanced level, or Otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside the country (Chapter 7, Section 39 HF). Special eligibility is held by those who have completed legal education and obtained a law degree/law candidate degree or equivalent. Special eligibility is also held by those who can invoke other completed education or relevant professional experience, if the education and/or professional experience is assessed to provide competence in the subject of the doctoral-level education equivalent to a law degree/law candidate degree in both subject-specific knowledge and legal general education relevant to the subject. Applicants must have completed a law degree or equivalent no later than September 21, 2026. Assessment Criteria Regulations for employment as a doctoral candidate are found in Chapter 5, Sections 1-7 HF. Regulations for admission to doctoral-level education are found in Chapter 7, Sections 34-41 HF. When admitting candidates to doctoral-level education, consideration shall be given to the ability to benefit from the doctoral-level education (Chapter 5, Section 5 HF, Chapter 7, Sections 35 and 41 HF). The applicant's ability to benefit from the education shall be assessed according to the following assessment criteria according to the Faculty's general study plan for doctoral-level education without ranking: Applicant's general competence: Quality and content of previous independent written work, such as the thesis Ability to actively participate in the Faculty's research environment Relevant educational background and grades Relevant professional experience Scientific quality of the project description: Ability to describe and problematize the current state of research Clarity and logical consistency in formulating objectives and research questions Rigor in legal argumentation and analysis Adequacy in choice of method and theory Ability for creativity and innovation in formulating research questions and approaches Language clarity and formalities Application Procedure The position is applied for through Lund University's recruitment system Varbi. The application must include a curriculum vitae, grade transcripts, a project description, a thesis or other written work, names of one or two reference persons (such as a supervisor or advisor), and any other documents the applicant wishes to submit. The project description, which is submitted as a text file in Varbi, must not exceed 15,000 characters including spaces, footnotes, references, etc. (exceeding text will not be considered) and must be written in English, Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian (see Guidelines for Project Description). The Committee for Doctoral-Level Education will interview a selection of applicants at a personal meeting or digitally on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Information about who is invited to interview will be provided no later than October 29, 2026. The interview will be based on the application and aims to deepen the Committee's knowledge of the applicant and their ability to benefit from the education. Terms Fixed-term employment for four years according to Chapter 5, Section 7 HF. The Faculty of Law is one of Lund University's four original faculties. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students at basic and advanced levels and about 160 employees, of which approximately 40 are doctoral candidates.
