Assistant Professor in Experimental Chemical Physics with a focus on characterization of chemical processes using X-ray techniques
Stockholm University is announcing an assistant professor position, WISE fellow, within the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE), a program funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The current position is for an assistant professor conducting research in experimental chemical physics with a focus on characterizing chemical processes using X-ray techniques. The recruited individual will be part of a national research program within WISE, which provides opportunities for broad collaboration with other researchers and stakeholders in the field. Funding for two doctoral students and two postdoctoral researchers is included in the recruitment package.
Physikum is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Science with broad basic research activities, both experimental and theoretical. The department has approximately 230 employees, of which about 65 are doctoral students, and has an international character.

Field of Study

Field Description
The subject area concerns studies of fundamental chemical processes on or in environmentally sustainable materials, where X-ray spectroscopic methods are applied and/or further developed.
Duties
Research as well as some teaching and supervision.
Qualifications
Eligible for employment as an assistant professor is someone who has completed a doctoral degree or holds a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. Primarily, such a degree should have been completed no more than seven years before the application deadline. However, someone who completed such a degree earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
All teaching positions at Stockholm University require that the applicant has the ability to collaborate and is otherwise suitable to perform the duties.
Evaluation Criteria
Particular weight is placed on scientific merit. Some weight is also placed on pedagogical skill and the ability to lead and develop research activities, or clear potential to do so, for example through experience in supervision, project management, collaboration, or other forms of academic responsibility.
Scientific merit will primarily be assessed within the subject area of the position.
Some weight is also placed on:
- documented experience with ultrafast (femtosecond) laser spectroscopy and/or ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy at free-electron lasers
- documented experience with X-ray spectroscopy under operando conditions
- the research plan's focus, which should focus on studies of fundamental chemical processes, where the specialized instrument UOPS forms a crucial component.
Terms of Employment
The assistant professor position is part of the university's career path ("tenure track") and is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 2024:673).
For this position, the assistant professor is employed on a permanent basis, but for a maximum of six years. The employment can be extended to a maximum of eight years if special reasons exist. Special reasons may include, for example, sick leave or parental leave.
Following application and review, the assistant professor may be promoted to permanent employment as a university lecturer. Specific criteria for promotion from assistant professor to university lecturer are established by the Board of Natural Science.
An application for promotion to university lecturer must be submitted to the faculty no later than nine months before the assistant professor position expires.

As a WISE fellow, a start-up package is included that covers salary for two postdoctoral researchers and two doctoral students.
Physikum is embedded in national and international collaborations. The UOPS instrument is under development, enabling unique investigations of chemical processes under realistic conditions using hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy up to 1 bar gas pressure at free-electron lasers. A high harmonic generation (HHG) source is being developed in the local laser laboratory.
