Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; www.ludc.med.lu.se) hereby announces a position for a bioinformatician. LUDC is one of the world's largest diabetes centers with approximately 300 employees (researchers and other staff) working to prevent diabetes and improve diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. To achieve these goals, the center combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, molecular and cell biology, physiology, and clinical diabetes and endocrinology. LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases with whole-genome data linked to national registers containing data on disease incidence and progression, as well as registers with data on treatment and treatment response. The center has its own platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate (the bioinformatician) will be part of the Bioinformatics Unit at LUDC, which includes two bioinformaticians, a biostatistician, a data manager, a data engineer, and an IT-data manager (LUDC Bioinformatics Unit | LUDC). The unit provides bioinformatics, biostatistics, and computational support to all those affiliated with LUDC, as well as access to a high-performance computing environment. Support includes participation in both long-term research projects and smaller-scale projects, as well as being available for consultations, questions, and guidance within the scope of various LUDC projects.
You will handle requests and deliver short- and long-term bioinformatics solutions to researchers at LUDC who are not bioinformaticians, and you must be able to communicate effectively with non-experts and plan/allocate your time between multiple different projects. The bioinformatician will contribute to manuscript preparation with state-of-the-art analyses and publication-quality images/graphs.
The bioinformatician will be involved in all aspects of developing, implementing, and managing bioinformatics/computational pipelines for varying types of data, including but not limited to genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, as well as clinical data and metadata. We also expect the bioinformatician to independently follow developments in the bioinformatics field in order to improve existing pipelines and present alternative solutions for how best to utilize available data and resources.
Another important part of the work that the bioinformatician will perform includes quality control, processing, and analysis of data for the Human Tissue Laboratory (HTL), a very important resource for LUDC researchers. HTL collects human tissue samples for research purposes and performs central analyses of these materials which are available to colleagues at LUDC and Uppsala University.
The candidate is also expected to participate in training and provide support to LUDC personnel and researchers in the selection and use of bioinformatics tools.
Qualifications
The position requires:
PhD in bioinformatics, mathematics, molecular biology, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
proven experience applying quantitative methods to data analysis tasks, as well as experience in programming and computing clusters.
practical experience handling, analyzing, and annotating various types of omics data from high-throughput techniques, such as single-cell, bulk, and spatial RNA sequencing, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, DNA methylation analysis, eQTL mapping, and immune repertoire sequencing, both in exploratory analyses and in standardized analysis pipelines.
proficiency in R and knowledge and experience with BASH/UNIX.
experience with biostatistics and machine learning algorithms and frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, Keras, and TensorFlow).
experience with data analysis and data mining to identify trends and produce meaningful data visualizations. Experience with web-based bioinformatics tools and public databases of biological data.
highly capable of collaborating in interdisciplinary teams, which may include laboratory researchers, physicians, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, and data analysts.

documented excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Meritorious for the position:
experience working with reproducible research tools such as R Markdown/Quarto, Git, Conda, Snakemake, or other workflow languages and container-based solutions.
experience with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning for analysis of biological and biomedical data.
GitHub profile with code examples is advantageous.
experience with other programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Perl).
experience working with multi-omics data integration.
experience analyzing metagenomic and (phospho)proteomic data.
excellent communication skills (both oral and written), including oral presentations and poster presentations.
experience in training and/or teaching.
experience working in an international environment.
Other
The position is a permanent employment at 100%, with start date October 1, 2026 or by agreement. A six-month probationary period may be applied.
