Research Assistant in Machine Learning (AI Initiative)

Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is implementing a strategic artificial intelligence (AI) initiative aimed at strengthening education and research through AI. As part of this initiative, ten research assistants will be hired and distributed across the university's departments (two per department). The work is coordinated centrally within LTU's AI initiative and takes place in close collaboration with other research assistants and the rector's AI advisor, Marcus Liwicki. In your role as a research assistant, you will contribute to the development of education and research-related activities connected to AI. Responsibilities As a research assistant, you will help support and strengthen the use of AI in education, research, and operational support at the university. The work takes place in close collaboration with the university's departments, teachers, researchers, and administrative staff. Your responsibilities include participating in and contributing to workshops, seminars, and discussions on the use of AI in education, research, and administrative processes. You will work with key personnel at the department, such as principal education leaders (HUL), teachers, researchers, and operational support managers, to identify needs and opportunities related to AI. The work also involves mapping and disseminating best practices for AI use within the university, as well as contributing to the planning and implementation of activities that strengthen AI competence at the department. Your role also includes contributing to documentation, experience sharing, and reporting on completed activities. You will also support the department's participation in the university's joint AI initiatives. This includes participation in planning and implementing LTU AI Day, which will be held on November 3–4, 2026. Required Qualifications and Experience You must be enrolled in a degree program at Luleå University of Technology in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field, such as Applied AI, Computer Science, or Civil Engineering Computer Science. Students in relevant master's programs are also welcome to apply. You must have completed at least four full-time semesters of study, with at least two semesters at LTU. You must demonstrate strong academic performance in relevant areas such as computer science, artificial intelligence, or machine learning, and have completed courses with clear connections to AI. It is advantageous if you have experience with generative AI, large language models (LLM), AI agents, or related technologies. Programming experience, for example in Python, as well as knowledge of relevant tools and frameworks, is also advantageous. Furthermore, experience with project work, student engagement, or work with knowledge dissemination and educational initiatives is viewed positively. To succeed in this role, you are proactive, responsible, and have strong collaboration skills. You enjoy communicating with different target audiences, work independently, and actively contribute to the development of the operation. Terms of Employment Employment as a research assistant is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5. Only those enrolled in education at the basic or advanced level may be employed as a research assistant (HF 5 kap §10). Hourly Rate/Compensation For all assignments, you will receive an hourly rate plus valuable work experience for your CV. Hourly rate depending on the difficulty of the work assignment: Level 1: 156 kr/hour (equivalent to approximately 25,700 kr/month for full-time work). Level 2: 171 kr/hour (equivalent to approximately 28,200 kr/month for full-time work). Level 3: Decisions regarding other compensation are made in consultation with your manager according to work and decision procedures. Information The position comprises 10% of full-time employment for 6 months, from August 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, or by agreement. The work location is Luleå. The workload may vary over time and by agreement, but the goal is to distribute it in a way that is compatible with studies at the university.
