Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences Description of the Subject Area The disease panorama in pulmonary medicine spans several major public health conditions such as asthma, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic airway diseases, and lung cancer. Within these areas, the research group conducts clinical and epidemiological studies. In collaboration with preclinical research groups, the group also participates in several translational projects. Duties The duties include research, teaching, clinical service, and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration, and supervision of doctoral students. The holder also has a responsibility to follow developments in their own field. The appointee is expected to lead an active research group and to initiate and conduct research projects. The appointee is also expected to have the ability to competitively obtain external research funding. The position also includes clinical work as a specialist physician in pulmonary medicine at Uppsala University Hospital, which entails close coordination between research, education, and clinical activity. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for appointment as professor, one must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical skill (Chapter 4, Section 3, HF). Selection Criteria When selecting among eligible applicants, primary weight will be placed on scientific skill and subsequently on pedagogical skill. However, an overall assessment will be made so that an applicant with significant advantage in pedagogical skill may be ranked ahead of an applicant with some advantage in scientific skill. Clinical skill is also important for the position and will be given weight. Scientific skill refers to research merits. In assessing scientific skill, scientific quality will be primarily considered. The scope of research, particularly regarding depth and breadth, will also be given importance. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the research level, the ability to competitively obtain research funding, and the ability to cooperate with society through research will be given importance (Section 20 AO). Pedagogical skill refers to teaching merits. In assessing pedagogical skill, pedagogical quality will be primarily considered. Scope, both breadth and depth, will also be given importance. Clinical skill is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical education as well as participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work includes, among other things, initiatives that have improved or made healthcare more efficient (Section 24 AO). Selection Criteria, Other Skills Administrative skill and leadership skill are important for the position and will be given weight. The ability to cooperate with society as well as to communicate about research and development work will be considered. Administrative skill is demonstrated, among other things, through the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-appropriate manner and through the ability to set and maintain timelines. The skill includes overall activity planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the activity's priorities (Section 28 AO). Leadership skill is demonstrated through the ability to lead activities and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to effectively reach common goals. The ability to coordinate the group as well as to contribute to creating commitment, participation, and job satisfaction, and the ability to handle conflicts are further examples of demonstrated skill (Section 30 AO). When assessing cooperation skill, experience of and skill in science communication, editorship, and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the university and the outside world, as well as experience in innovation and entrepreneurship will be given importance (Section 6 RB). This is a long-term opportunity within a stable public healthcare provider offering modern equipment, a structured introduction programme, and a clear pathway toward Swedish professional authorization. The department The department consists of approximately 30 employees, including 15 radiographers, radiologists, assistant nurses and medical physicists. The unit operates in recently renovated facilities with newly upgraded CT, conventional X-ray, ultrasound and fluoroscopy equipment. An MRI replacement is planned. Both acute and elective imaging are performed. The department collaborates closely with primary care, inpatient services, the emergency department, private healthcare providers, and other radiology units within the county. This ensures a varied and clinically broad workload. Several radiographers have previously been internationally recruited and are now well established locally with their families, contributing to a supportive and inclusive working environment. The hospital serves approximately 27,000 inhabitants locally and around 39,000 in the wider catchment area. The area offers a safe, family-friendly environment with access to schools, childcare, and extensive natural surroundings. The role The position includes standard duties as a licensed radiographer, primarily within: Conventional radiography CT MRI (may become part of responsibilities over time) You will work with both emergency and planned examinations. A structured introduction programme lasting 6–12 months is provided, depending on previous experience, to ensure competence in equipment, routines, and Swedish clinical standards. Collaboration with a nearby radiology unit (approximately 40 minutes by car) may occur. Travel takes place during working hours. Evening standby duty is included. Approximately once per week. You are required to be on site within 30 minutes when on standby duty.
