Project Description Cyberattacks and cyber warfare are an increasing threat to all critical infrastructure. Power systems are particularly vulnerable because other critical infrastructure, such as healthcare, communications, and payment systems, depend on them. We are seeking a doctoral candidate who wants to conduct important and challenging research in the field of cybersecurity for power systems. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), threat modeling, and simulations, we can learn more about how cybersecurity can be improved. The following are examples of possible projects: Cybersecurity for power grid substations and their data communications Cyber threats to future power systems Cyber resilience in power systems Cybersecure power systems with the help of AI/ML We offer varied and exciting work that is shaped by the doctoral candidates and the research group together. Each doctoral candidate will be supervised by at least two advisors. The Department of Electrical Engineering also offers salary supplements for employment as a doctoral candidate at the department. Duties Conduct research on cybersecurity for power systems with the aim of producing scientific articles. Develop and work with software tools that help conduct research to, for example, simulate data flows or cyberattacks. Teaching and other departmental service will also be included in the duties, but no more than 20% of working time. Qualification Requirements Eligible for doctoral-level education is someone who has completed a degree at an advanced level, such as a Master of Science degree or equivalent foreign degree assessed as corresponding to a master's degree, in computer science, electrical engineering, energy systems, information technology, systems in technology and society, engineering physics, or equivalent, or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level including an independent thesis of at least 15 higher education credits, or acquired qualifications in other ways that are essentially equivalent to the above. PhD Student in Agrarian History

Department of Urban and Rural Development Doctoral Subject: Agrarian History Description of the PhD Project: A key question in historical research is how people in pre-industrial societies gained access to food. During the early modern period, the majority of all food in Europe consisted of grain, transformed into bread, beer, and porridge. This was the most important human energy source, and the vast majority of Europe's population therefore worked to produce, transport, and process grain. Project Description Our research group specializes in the development of porous materials for applications such as gas separation (particularly greenhouse gases), water purification, catalysis, and drug delivery. We have strong expertise in the synthesis and optimization of a broad spectrum of porous materials, including porous oxides, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), etc. This project focuses primarily on environmental applications of porous materials, such as MOFs. Specific application areas include adsorption and catalytic degradation of pollutants, particularly PFAS and greenhouse gases. The project mainly encompasses the synthesis, characterization, and optimization of both existing and new MOFs. Diversity and Interactions of Plasmid-Dependent Phages in Aquatic Ecosystems

Department of Water and Environment Doctoral Program Subject: Biology Description of the Doctoral Project: Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver behind the spread of AMR is horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids, mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but so far overlooked tool for controlling the spread of resistance genes. This doctoral project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025). The overarching goal of ECOPHARM is to map the mechanisms governing PDPs' interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in aquatic environments. Project Description The development of tomorrow's energy storage materials relies on a fundamental understanding of how their chemical composition and structure change during operation in applications. No single method can capture the complete picture. Instead, researchers must rely on multiple complementary techniques, each providing an incomplete and indirect view of the same underlying process and which are traditionally interpreted manually and separately. Multimodal machine learning offers a principled alternative: integrating heterogeneous data streams from both experiments and simulations into a unified, physically grounded model. The project focuses on developing such a framework and applying it specifically to electrode/electrolyte interfaces in batteries, where surface-sensitive X-ray scattering techniques (X-ray reflectometry, GISAXS, and GIWAXS) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) are combined in operando experiments. The core of the methodology is data assimilation, where the interface's underlying properties (mass, volume, density, porosity, and morphology) are treated as a latent state evolving in time, with each measurement technique contributing a noisy and incomplete observation through its own forward model. The work encompasses sequential Bayesian inference, deep state-space models, and uncertainty-aware representations trained on both experimental data and simulations, such as phase-field simulations of metal nucleation and growth coupled to lattice-Boltzmann modeling of the quartz crystal's acoustic response. Machine learning-accelerated surrogate models make these simulations sufficiently fast to function as transition and observation operators in the inference engine. Finally, the learned latent space is analyzed to extract physical meaning, and the models' generative capability is leveraged to translate data between techniques. The goal is an interpretable and uncertainty-quantified model of how interfaces form and grow, deepening understanding of metal deposition and surface passivation in Li-, Zn-, and Cu-based systems, and transferable to other materials and analytical techniques. The PhD student's task is to develop and implement this framework in close collaboration between chemistry and computer science at Uppsala University and together with our German partners. This involves building and validating inference and simulation pipelines, actively participating in planning and conducting operando experiments – including measurement campaigns at the synchrotron facility PETRA III (DESY, Hamburg) – and developing deep expertise in probabilistic machine learning, data assimilation, scientific computing, and analysis of electrochemical interfaces. The PhD student's focus is research. Some teaching responsibility may be assigned but will not exceed 20% of total working time. The PhD student will also take graduate courses closely connected to the project's research themes. We are looking for a highly motivated person who will contribute to high-quality scientific work in a multidisciplinary research environment, aiming to publish results in leading scientific journals and present them at both national and international conferences. Department of Plant Production Ecology Doctoral Field: Biology with specialization in Ecology. Description of the PhD Project: Crop production faces increasingly significant challenges due to multiple interacting stress factors, including drought, heat, limited nutrient availability, weeds, pests, and diseases. Genetic diversity in crops can strengthen resilience under such conditions, but how this resilience is expressed depends heavily on environment, cultivation techniques, and management. Cultivation methods using cover crops or undersown intercropping can contribute to sustainability by providing valuable ecosystem services such as regulation of weeds, pests, and diseases, nitrogen fixation, and preservation of soil health and fertility. However, there is still limited knowledge about how genetic diversity in crops and cover crops or undersown intercropping interact to reduce the effects of multiple stress factors, which represents an important knowledge gap that this project aims to fill. The project will investigate how different cultivation methods affect the resilience of main crops, particularly wheat and peas, against multiple stress factors. You will study how different cultivation methods affect the response of various varieties or genotypes under varying growing conditions, with particular focus on the interaction between variety/genotype, environment, and cultivation method. The goal is to increase understanding of how cultivation methods affect different crop genotypes' resilience to multiple stress factors and to identify promising combinations of varieties/genotypes and cultivation methods that can contribute to stable yields and good productivity under low-input growing conditions. Field experiments will be conducted comparing different cultivation methods. Field measurements will include crop development, phenology, yield, and quality characteristics, as well as documentation of a broad spectrum of abiotic and biotic stress factors such as drought, heat stress, nutrient deficiency, and occurrence of weeds, pests, and plant diseases. Surveys of biological diversity, microbiome analyses, and environmental observations will provide additional evidence for assessing the effects of different cultivation methods and for evaluating crop performance. Department of Crop Production Ecology Research subject: Biology with specialisation in ecology Description of the doctoral project Crop production is increasingly challenged by multiple, interacting stresses, including drought, heat, nutrient limitations, weeds, pests, and diseases. Crop genetic diversity can strengthen resilience under these conditions, but the expression of resilience depends strongly on the environment and on how crops are managed. Service crops, used as an agroecological management practice, can provide valuable ecosystem services, such as the regulation of weeds, pests, and diseases, as well as nitrogen fixation and the maintenance of soil health and fertility. However, there is still limited understanding of how crop genetic diversity and service crops interact to alleviate multiple stresses - an important knowledge gap that this project will address. The project will investigate how agroecological management practices influence resilience to multiple stresses in wheat and pea. You will examine how management practices modify genotype responses across growing conditions, with a particular focus on interactions between genotype, environment, and management. The aim is to understand how management practices shape resilience to multiple stresses in different crop genotypes and to identify promising variety–management combinations that support stable performance under low-input conditions. Experiments will be conducted under field conditions, comparing different agroecological management practices. Measurements will include crop development, phenology, yield, and quality traits, alongside monitoring of a broad range of abiotic and biotic stresses, including drought, heat, nutrient limitation, weeds, pests, and diseases. Project Description Immunotherapy has become a life-saving option for patients with advanced cancer. However, only a minority of patients develop a sustained response. Many researchers are working to better understand the complexity of anti-cancer immunity and develop diagnostic methods that accurately predict treatment benefit and enable personalized cancer treatment planning. Modern AI-based methods are essential to advance this research frontier. This project is an important part of our broader initiative to develop and apply innovative, interpretable data-driven analysis methods to significantly increase our understanding of how immune cell interactions affect the cancer microenvironment. We will apply these analysis methods to high-information multimodal microscopy data and develop techniques to integrate correlated structural and molecular analysis in three-dimensional tissue space. This integration will enable improved prediction of disease progression and response to specific treatments. Duties The doctoral student will primarily focus on their own research training. Department of Aquatic Resources Doctoral Field: Biology. Assessment and prioritization of marine and coastal restoration measures. There is an acute need for restoration in coastal and marine areas. The restoration challenge is complex, as many areas are affected by large-scale pressures that interact with local effects. To meet this challenge, we need to understand how ecological knowledge can be combined with societal processes, both at local and larger spatial scales. The doctoral position is part of a project that will support effective strategic planning for marine coastal restoration by developing key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of coastal restoration measures based on ecological, social, and economic sustainability aspects. The project group is interdisciplinary and includes researchers in ecology, sociology, and national economics. The project's results will form the basis for restoration measures at both local and national levels. Human Exposure to Emerging Environmental Contaminants via High-Resolution MS

Department of Water and Environment Doctoral Study Subject: Environmental Analysis with specialization in Environmental Chemistry Description of the Doctoral Project: This doctoral project aims to develop an analytically robust strategy to identify, measure, and interpret emerging environmental contaminants (contaminants of emerging concern, CECs) relevant to human exposure via water. The project will use existing information from pan-European monitoring campaigns stored in the NORMAN database on chemical occurrences to identify substances that may be present in water resources and contribute to human exposure. Based on this knowledge, the doctoral student will develop and validate analytical methods for selected emerging contaminants and apply these to water-related samples collected at the national or international level. The results will be interpreted using hazard, exposure, and risk indicators to support the prioritization of substances for future monitoring. Additionally, suspect screening and non-target screening will be used to identify new substances that can contribute to early warning systems for emerging chemical risks. The project includes: i) selection and prioritization of emerging environmental contaminants using European monitoring data and information on chemical properties of substances; ii) development and validation of an LC-HRMS-based targeted method for selected substances; iii) application of the method to water-related samples, such as drinking water and precipitation; iv) comparison between LC-HRMS and LC-MS/MS for selected compounds to evaluate sensitivity, linearity, precision, and suitability for monitoring; and v) interpretation of results in relation to human exposure. You will work in an international and interdisciplinary research team. The project provides access to advanced instrumentation and training in data analysis, scientific communication, and international research collaboration. Duties: We are seeking a doctoral student who wants to contribute to increased knowledge of emerging environmental contaminants in water-related exposure pathways for humans, with a particular focus on analytical method development and high-resolution mass spectrometry. To achieve this goal, you will develop and apply analytical workflows for determining selected emerging contaminants in water-related samples collected at the national or international level. The selection of substances will be based on existing knowledge and available monitoring data. A central part of the project is the use of liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) for sensitive and reliable chemical analysis. Analysis of polar substances may require the use of specialized chromatographic columns. The project may also include comparisons between LC-HRMS and LC-MS/MS for selected substances to assess method sensitivity, linearity, precision, and suitability for monitoring. Selected samples may be analyzed using effect-directed analysis (EDA) to link chemical occurrence to biological effects. Duties also include sample preparation, extraction and analysis of contaminants, HRMS data processing, quality assurance, data analysis, visualization and interpretation of results using hazard, exposure, and risk indicators, collaboration with national and international partners, and authoring scientific articles in English. Eligibility: Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed an advanced degree, completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS at the advanced level, or who have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country (the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 § 39). Special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in the subject of Environmental Analysis with specialization in Environmental Chemistry is held by those with knowledge in aquatic ecology, aquatic biogeochemistry, statistics, or ecotoxicology. Undergraduate education must include an independent project. In addition, you must have English language skills equivalent to a passing grade in English B/6 from Swedish upper secondary school. Advanced Screening & Prioritization of Emerging Contaminants in Food Chains

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Environmental assessment, specializing in environmental chemistry. Description of the doctoral project This doctoral project aims to improve the understanding of contaminants of emerging concern in food chains by using bioaccumulation and trophic transfer as a strategy for chemical prioritization. The project will investigate how contaminants move from environmental sources into organisms and through food chains, and how these processes can be used to identify substances of relevance for ecosystems and One Health. The project will focus on one or more selected food-chain systems, depending on sample availability, collaborations and scientific relevance. About the position We are seeking a PhD student who will advance the understanding of contaminants of emerging concern in food chains, with a particular focus on bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and advanced chemical screening. To achieve this aim, you will develop and apply analytical workflows for the detection and identification of known and previously unknown compounds in complex biological matrices, including sample preparation, extraction and clean-up strategies. The project will also include semi-quantitative analysis of detected compounds and the assessment of bioaccumulation, biomagnification and trophic transfer patterns in selected food-chain systems. Where suitable samples are available, environmental specimen bank material may be used to investigate time trends and support retrospective screening. The duties also include preparation of biological and environmental samples, extraction and analysis of target and non-target compounds, processing of large HRMS datasets, data analysis, statistical evaluation, interpretation of chemical patterns in relation to environmental sources, collaboration with national and international partners, and scientific manuscript writing in English. Requirements To meet the general entry requirements you must have been awarded a second-cycle (Master's) qualification, satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance 1993:100, Chapter 7, Section 39). Specific entry requirements for the third-cycle courses and study programme in environmental assessment, specializing in environmental chemistry.
