Eligibility and Qualification Requirements To be eligible for appointment as a professor, one must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence (Higher Education Ordinance 4 ch 3 §). The pedagogical competence, scientific expertise, and professional competence must be relevant to the subject matter of the position and the work tasks included in the employment. Scientific competence must be demonstrated through independent research contributions and by the applicant's work maintaining high international quality. The applicant must have demonstrated skill in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research, and must have shown ability to competitively obtain research funding. Pedagogical competence must be demonstrated through merits in education and teaching. Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented competence in supervision at undergraduate, advanced, and especially doctoral levels, and otherwise fulfill what is prescribed in Uppsala University's employment regulations (§ 32) and the Social Sciences Faculty's supplementary guidelines (section 2b). Diversity and Interactions of Plasmid-Dependent Phages in Aquatic Ecosystems
Department of Water and Environment Doctoral Program Subject: Biology Description of the Doctoral Project: Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver behind the spread of AMR is horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids, mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but so far overlooked tool for controlling the spread of resistance genes. This doctoral project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025). The overarching goal of ECOPHARM is to map the mechanisms governing PDPs' interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in aquatic environments. As a doctoral student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of PDPs in aquatic ecosystems. Each call results in a medical assessment, prioritization, and action. Your task is to quickly assess acute conditions/events and through a structured approach identify ambulance care needs. Your Qualifications We are looking for you who are a licensed nurse with at least two years of experience. Since the work is based on the connection between technology and people, you need to have an interest in both aspects. Diversity of Plasmid-Dependent Phages in Aquatic Ecosystems
Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver of AMR spread is the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids — mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but largely overlooked tool in controlling resistance gene transmission. This PhD project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025) and is based at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, SLU Uppsala. The overarching aim of ECOPHARM is to decipher the mechanisms driving PDP interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on antibiotic resistance gene transmission in aquatic environments. As a PhD student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of plasmid-dependent phages in aquatic ecosystems. The work will combine environmental sampling, cultivation-based approaches, metagenomics, genome analysis, and experimental infection assays. You will work in a dynamic and internationally connected research environment at the intersection of microbial ecology, virus-host coevolution, and AMR research.
