Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries – Precision Manufacturing
Job Responsibilities The next major breakthrough in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept makes it possible to replace the highly flammable organic electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish national battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transport sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions from multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis, cell manufacturing, characterization, modeling to scaled-up production. The two-year postdoctoral project: Scalable Production of Solid-State Batteries through Precision Manufacturing will be conducted at the Department of Production Development ITM. The project offers an opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of precision manufacturing and metrology, production technology and digital manufacturing, applied to solid-state batteries. The aim is to investigate how high manufacturing precision can reduce process variations, minimize process-induced defects and increase robustness of the manufacturing process, and how variations arise and propagate throughout the entire manufacturing chain, from production equipment performance and component machining to cell assembly, and how these can be characterized, quantified and controlled. A central goal is to develop measurement-based methods that describe the relationship between manufacturing precision, process capability and product quality. Precision metrology and integrated quality control will be used to identify critical process parameters, analyze error sources and establish manufacturing tolerances that enable robust production. Advanced measurement and non-destructive testing methods, including optical and laser-based measurement techniques, industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonic testing, will be used to monitor process stability and identify defects at various stages of the manufacturing process. The collected measurement data can be combined with process models and digital engineering tools to support tolerance analysis, process analysis and continuous improvement. The expected outcomes of the project are new methods to reduce manufacturing variations, improve process capability and enable reliable industrial scale-up of solid-state battery production. Qualifications Requirements Completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, production engineering, or a related field, with experience in manufacturing technology, precision manufacturing or industrial measurement technology. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English as required in daily work. Good theoretical and practical abilities. Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality. Postdoctoral Researcher in Astrophysics, with focus on Haro 11
The Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University has approximately 80 employees, including about 30 doctoral students. The department's main research areas are galaxies, supernovae, computational astrophysics, solar physics, and planet and star formation. The extragalactic research (which includes this position) is also connected to the Oskar Klein Centre (OKC) for astroparticle physics, in collaboration with the Department of Physics at Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), all of which are located in the same building. The building also houses Nordita (Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics), which has a research group in astrophysics. Project Description The postdoctoral position is linked to an observational project with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), "The obscured regions of the nearest Lyman continuum leaker: massive stars or accreting black holes?" (program ID 8290). The project involves integral field spectroscopy with NIRSpec and MIRI as well as imaging with NIRCam and MIRI of the blue compact galaxy Haro 11. Responsibilities The position includes analysis of JWST imaging data and spectroscopic data from the project mentioned above. The work will involve analysis of emission from nebulae, PAH molecules (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and dust, modeling of embedded star clusters, and suspected sources driven by black holes. The goal is to create a complete picture of the ionization budget and the escape of ionizing photons in this prototypical galaxy. Qualifications To be eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must hold a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree. The degree must be completed no later than when the employment decision is made or when the position begins. Selection Criteria It is meritorious if the doctoral degree or equivalent was completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, an earlier completed degree may also be considered meritorious.
