The position is placed at the Faculty of Medicine. Departmental placement is determined in connection with the appointment. Facilities, other infrastructure, and resources for the position are financed according to the faculty's current model. The position will be combined with employment as a specialist physician/senior physician. Since the subject is defined as medical research, there is no specific need to fill. The purpose of the appointment is to recruit internationally competitive researchers with documented ability to conduct independent, high-quality research and with clear potential to develop into future leaders in academia. Duties Duties primarily include independent research and development work as well as supervision of master's and doctoral students, but also teaching at undergraduate level, leadership, and administration. Other duties may also be included. Qualifications Eligible for appointment as a lecturer according to the Higher Education Ordinance 4 chapter 4 § is a person who has both demonstrated pedagogical competence and completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence or other professional competence that is relevant considering the subject content of the position and the duties to be included in the employment. The applicant must have completed university pedagogical training equivalent to at least five weeks or acquired equivalent knowledge in another way, unless there are special reasons. The employee must then complete university pedagogical training during the first two years of employment to meet this requirement. Since the appointment as university lecturer is combined with employment as a specialist-trained physician, the applicant must have a specialist competence certificate and possess the necessary knowledge of Swedish required for the medical profession according to the definition of the National Board of Health and Welfare at the time of taking up the clinical position (Swedish language skills, at least level C1 according to the Council of Europe scale, which also accepts equivalent knowledge of Norwegian or Danish). Assessment Criteria The applicant must have demonstrated scientific and pedagogical competence of significance to the subject. Special weight will be given to scientific competence in the assessment. The applicant must have demonstrated scientific competence by maintaining a good national and international level as a researcher and have well-documented scientific competence. The applicant must have a doctoral degree within a subject area relevant to the position. Scientific competence must be documented through an independent research profile that has made an international impact. This means that the applicant has established a distinct research line that is separate from previous advisors or research environments, has ongoing grants obtained in competition with the applicant as principal investigator, experience of a postdoc period conducted in an environment other than where the applicant received their doctoral degree, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Particular consideration is given to publications with the applicant as a senior author. Weight will also be placed on pedagogical competence and ability to supervise master's students and doctoral candidates. Pedagogical competence must be demonstrated both in teaching and in supervision at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. Consideration will also be given to demonstrated ability in leadership, collaboration, clinical competence, and demonstrated ability to interact with the surrounding society. Regarding clinical competence, experience of independent work in healthcare is required where the applicant has current clinical activity. In the appointment, scientific development potential will be particularly emphasized. This includes the ability to build and lead a competitive research environment in the long term. The applicant's research profile must further have the potential to strengthen the faculty's international impact and contribute to the development of excellent research environments. Particular weight will be given to the applicant's potential to develop into a future professor, including the ability to build and lead a competitive research environment in the long term. Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences Description of the Subject Area The disease panorama in pulmonary medicine spans several major public health conditions such as asthma, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic airway diseases, and lung cancer. Within these areas, the research group conducts clinical and epidemiological studies. In collaboration with preclinical research groups, the group also participates in several translational projects. Duties The duties include research, teaching, clinical service, and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration, and supervision of doctoral students. The holder also has a responsibility to follow developments in their own field. The appointee is expected to lead an active research group and to initiate and conduct research projects. The appointee is also expected to have the ability to competitively obtain external research funding. The position also includes clinical work as a specialist physician in pulmonary medicine at Uppsala University Hospital, which entails close coordination between research, education, and clinical activity. Qualification Requirements To be eligible for appointment as professor, one must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical skill (Chapter 4, Section 3, HF). According to Section 5 of Uppsala University's Employment Regulations (AO), the general qualification requirement for teachers is that the applicant must have the ability to cooperate and otherwise meet the requirements of suitability needed to perform the duties well. Scientific skill must be demonstrated through independent research contributions and through merits that are of very high quality from an international perspective. Pedagogical skill must be demonstrated through extensive merits in teaching in accordance with Section 22 AO. Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented skill in supervision at undergraduate, advanced, and research levels. For eligibility for this position, a medical degree and Swedish proof of specialist competence in pulmonary medicine are required. If the applicant lacks Swedish proof of specialist competence in pulmonary medicine, they must have submitted an application for this to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) by the last application deadline for the position. The applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish and English (Section 6 AO). Selection Criteria When selecting among eligible applicants, primary weight will be placed on scientific skill and subsequently on pedagogical skill. However, an overall assessment will be made so that an applicant with significant advantage in pedagogical skill may be ranked ahead of an applicant with some advantage in scientific skill. Clinical skill is also important for the position and will be given weight. Scientific skill refers to research merits. In assessing scientific skill, scientific quality will be primarily considered. The scope of research, particularly regarding depth and breadth, will also be given importance. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the research level, the ability to competitively obtain research funding, and the ability to cooperate with society through research will be given importance (Section 20 AO). Pedagogical skill refers to teaching merits. In assessing pedagogical skill, pedagogical quality will be primarily considered. Scope, both breadth and depth, will also be given importance. Clinical skill is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical education as well as participation in clinical development work. Clinical development work includes, among other things, initiatives that have improved or made healthcare more efficient (Section 24 AO). Selection Criteria, Other Skills Administrative skill and leadership skill are important for the position and will be given weight. The ability to cooperate with society as well as to communicate about research and development work will be considered. Administrative skill is demonstrated, among other things, through the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and purpose-appropriate manner and through the ability to set and maintain timelines. The skill includes overall activity planning and the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the activity's priorities (Section 28 AO). Leadership skill is demonstrated through the ability to lead activities and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to effectively reach common goals. The ability to coordinate the group as well as to contribute to creating commitment, participation, and job satisfaction, and the ability to handle conflicts are further examples of demonstrated skill (Section 30 AO).
