Subject Description The subject of employment is molecular ecology with a focus on population genetics. Research focuses on ungulates and carnivores in boreal forest ecosystems. Job Responsibilities The Assistant Professor shall develop an independent research profile within the subject area. The department will provide opportunities for the position holder to qualify for promotion to Associate Professor and Professor within the subject of employment. Research is expected to be conducted in close collaboration with researchers within the department and elsewhere at SLU, as well as through national and international collaboration. Additionally, the position holder shall: · work in accordance with SLU's vision, goals, and values · initiate the establishment of an independent research group within the subject area · seek external funding competitively and publish scientific articles · participate in graduate education as a co-supervisor · conduct research-based teaching at all levels of the education cycle · continue pedagogical professional development and are expected to meet the requirements for promotion to Professor at the end of the probationary appointment · collaborate and communicate with relevant stakeholders in the surrounding community Qualifications To be eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor, an applicant must hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, candidates who obtained this qualification within the last seven years before the application deadline should be considered. However, candidates who obtained a doctoral degree or equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special grounds. Special grounds include leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. The Assistant Professor must hold a doctoral degree in a subject relevant to the position or have equivalent scientific competence. Excellent ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, is required. Documented ability equivalent to SeQF Level 4 to communicate in Swedish, both orally and in writing, is required. Evaluation Criteria The degree of competence required for eligibility for employment shall be the primary evaluation criterion. When considering applications for the position of Assistant Professor, particular weight shall be given to qualitative indicators of the applicant's scientific competence within the subject of employment. Furthermore, the applicant's ability to develop an independent research line within the current research area and to meet the requirements for promotion to Professor during the probationary appointment will be assessed. Additional considerations include: · ability to manage and analyze large and complex datasets · competence in integrating genetic, demographic, and behavioral data to understand evolutionary and ecological processes in vertebrate model systems · experience developing statistical and genetic tools for basic research questions, theory development, and hypothesis testing · experience collaborating with the public and regulatory agencies The position will be offered to the candidate who, following a comprehensive qualitative assessment, is deemed to have the best qualifications to carry out and develop the current work tasks and contribute to positive development of the activities. PhD Student in Mathematics with Focus on Combinatorics, Group Theory, and Geometry
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is announcing a fully funded PhD position in mathematics with a focus on combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. The position comprises four years of doctoral education including participation in research projects and doctoral courses. The application deadline is July 18, 2026. Project Description and Responsibilities The PhD student will conduct theoretical research at the intersection of combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. We will investigate questions about rigidity and motion in non-classical geometries using combinatorial, algebraic, and group-theoretic methods, inspired by the mathematical theory of articulated systems and constraint geometry. Possible tools include combinatorics, algebraic methods, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, and rigidity theory, depending on the selected PhD student's background and interests. The project's exact direction will be developed together with the selected PhD student, who will have significant freedom to influence the research within the project's overarching mathematical framework. The selected PhD student will become part of an active research environment in discrete mathematics, geometry, and group theory at Umeå University, with opportunities to interact with researchers active in combinatorics, geometry, group theory, and related areas. The project is integrated into an international network of research collaborations and offers opportunities for conference travel, research visits, and scientific exchange. Qualifications The PhD student will be admitted to doctoral studies in mathematics. Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. To meet the requirement for special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in mathematics, the applicant must have at least 60 hp within the field of mathematics, of which at least 15 hp at advanced level. The requirements for prior knowledge stated above are also considered met by those who in another manner acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. Good ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, is required. Experience in combinatorics, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, algebraic methods, and/or rigidity theory is meriting but not required for the position. As a PhD student, you are expected to take an active role in the project and in the department's activities. You are expected to have a scientific approach and good collaboration skills while being able to work independently. You should have a strong drive to continuously develop your knowledge and to develop into an independent researcher. Assessment criteria and the balance between them The degree of such skill as is required for eligibility for employment as an Assistant University Lecturer serves as the assessment criterion for the employment. In evaluating candidates, the degree of scientific skill shall be decisive. Furthermore, the degree of pedagogical and other skill shall be considered in the evaluation. In assessing scientific skill, particular weight shall be placed on the ability to independently conduct and publish research of high quality within your field of research and contributions to the international scientific community. Particular weight shall also be placed on experience in leading research and successfully obtaining research funding in competition with others. Great weight shall be placed on the quality of publications where the applicant has been the main author. In assessing pedagogical skill, particular weight shall be placed on experience in teaching and supervision. In assessing other skill, particular weight shall be placed on international mobility, for example research visits, experience from a postdoctoral stay, or employment at another institution than the one where the applicant completed their doctorate. Great weight shall be placed on established collaborations within and outside academia. A general requirement for all teacher categories is both good cooperation skills and the competence and suitability otherwise needed to perform work tasks well.
