Animal Protection Karlstad is seeking a committed operations manager who will take care of our daily operations and create the best possible conditions for the animals in our care. The position is full-time with immediate start. Animal Protection Karlstad is a non-profit animal protection organization working to help animals live better lives. We operate an animal shelter just outside Karlstad (Norra Grava 714), where we care for homeless and neglected cats. The facility is run by employed staff together with dedicated volunteers, and is led by the organization's board. We are now seeking an operations manager to manage the daily operations of the animal shelter and, as we grow, help develop the organization. About the role As operations manager, you are the person who makes the animal shelter's daily operations run smoothly. You work practically and closely with the cats, receive visitors and maintain external contact, while holding overall responsibility for the operations. Currently, you will work largely independently together with our volunteers, and as the operations grow, the role will expand to include more planning and coordination, and leading and distributing work among additional staff. This is not a purely office-based position. The focus lies in practical work at the animal shelter, combined with administration and responsibility. The role includes, among other things: Caring for the daily needs of the cats, such as feeding, enrichment, and socialization Cleaning and maintaining cages, enclosures, and common areas Observing the animals' health and reporting any changes Assisting with veterinary visits and providing basic treatments according to instructions Handling feral and shy cats that require special care Receiving and informing visitors at the animal shelter, and guiding people who wish to adopt a cat Planning and carrying out fieldwork Maintaining daily contact via phone and email with private individuals, authorities, veterinarians, and partners in various animal protection matters Handling administrative tasks such as record-keeping and documentation Collaborating with and supporting volunteers to create a safe environment for the animals Leading daily operations and, as the organization grows, helping to plan, coordinate, and lead the daily work of volunteers and staff Supervising interns, summer workers, and training any day volunteers We are looking for someone who Has a qualification in animal care/animal husbandry, as the role involves largely practical work with and handling of cats Has good experience handling animals and is calm and confident in handling, including shy and feral cats Is responsible, empathetic, and has a calm approach Is organized, self-driven, and solution-oriented and can manage your work independently Has good communication skills, both written and verbal, and is comfortable meeting people—both in face-to-face interactions with visitors at the shelter and through phone and email contact, including situations requiring conflict resolution Enjoys both independent work and teamwork with colleagues and volunteers Has the ability to understand regulations and policies and implement them in practice Has a genuine commitment to animal welfare Is flexible and able to work according to a schedule, with potential evening and weekend shifts as needed Has at least 5 years of professional work experience Holds a driver's license (Class B), as the role involves transporting animals to and from the veterinarian, etc. Has good computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Experience in administrative work, leadership, or non-profit organizations is a plus, as is knowledge of cat behavior and animal protection work. Since the role will expand with greater responsibility as we grow, we would like to see that you have the willingness and ability to develop alongside the organization.
