About Our Operations Mölndals sjukhus within Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhuset is one of northern Europe's largest orthopedic and hand surgery centers. We provide highly specialized care and have responsibilities at local, regional, and national levels. Our operations include an active research, development, education and innovation unit and close collaboration between clinic, development, research, and education. We have an intensive care unit with 6 beds and a 24-hour operating department (Operation 1), as well as a postoperative unit with 18 beds. In addition, there are two primarily day surgery operating departments (Operation 3 and 4), each with a post-anesthesia care unit, and an Eye Surgery unit (Operation 2) with three anesthesia-equipped operating rooms. The total operating activities encompass 20 operating rooms. Operation 3 – Day Surgery provides specialized day surgery, short-stay care, and some acute care during daytime, Monday through Friday. The unit has seven operating rooms, a post-anesthesia recovery unit, and a care unit for pre- and postoperative care. Adults and children undergo procedures in orthopedics, foot surgery, ENT, general surgery, and oral/maxillofacial surgery in collaboration with Folktandvården and Odontologen. The patient population is diverse and includes children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric conditions, which places special demands on perioperative management. Operation 4 – Hand Surgery provides acute and planned hand surgery, primarily in a day surgery model. Advanced, highly specialized elective reconstructive hand surgery is performed, including toe-to-hand transplantations and surgery with individually designed 3D-printed implants. The unit has three modern operating rooms and serves as the center for Advanced Reconstruction of Extremities (CARE), receiving patients with highly specialized needs from across the nation and internationally. For the anesthesiologist, these operations offer a stimulating combination of efficient day surgery workflows and patients with complex anesthetic needs. Regional anesthesia, with ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks, is an important and integral part of both operating departments. On Operation 3 and 4, approximately 750 children over 1 year and over 10 kg are anesthetized annually, often with complex congenital conditions, syndromes, or neurodevelopmental diagnoses. A total of approximately 1,000 pediatric anesthesias are performed annually at Mölndals sjukhus. We continuously develop to remain at the forefront of modern day surgery anesthesia and perioperative care. We actively work to advance our anesthetic methods and patient flows, including modern pharmacokinetic models, regional anesthesia, and organizational development of day surgery and extended-stay concepts. Our goal is to offer increasingly advanced surgery while maintaining high patient safety, good patient experience, and efficient perioperative workflows. About the Position We are seeking two specialist/senior physicians in anesthesia and intensive care to serve as Chief Medical Officers (VÖL) for Operation 3 – Day Surgery and Operation 4 – Hand Surgery. We want to create cohesive medical leadership for day surgery. Through integrated responsibility for Operation 3 and Operation 4, divided between two specialist/senior physicians, we aim to create better conditions for coordination, unified approaches, and continued development of the day surgery concept, while preserving each unit's profile and specific needs. For each position, the VÖL assignment comprises 10 percent of time and is combined with clinical work as an anesthesiologist. The positions are advertised as full-time employment. For the right candidate, discussion of alternative employment levels is possible. As VÖL, you will work closely with your VÖL colleague, other chief medical officers (such as the Pediatric VÖL and Pain Management VÖL), unit managers, section heads, and staff on both operating departments, as well as with the surgical teams. The assignment encompasses medical protocols and perioperative processes, quality and patient safety, and development of operational methods and patient flows. An important part of the assignment is to continue developing day surgery anesthesia in collaboration with the operations. This involves maintaining well-functioning approaches and driving the development of anesthetic methods and perioperative concepts that enable an increasing number of more complex patients to be managed within day surgery and short-stay care. What We Offer Operation 3 and Operation 4 together provide a broad and highly specialized anesthesiological environment—from standardized day surgery workflows to advanced surgery and patients with complex anesthetic needs. As VÖL, you will have the opportunity to influence how day surgery operations develop and to implement new methods and knowledge in clinical practice. The assignment is combined with continued clinical work, which ensures close connection to the operations you lead. You will collaborate closely with your VÖL colleague, other VÖLs, unit managers, and section heads. With us, you gain access to a major university hospital's resources in research, education, development, and innovation, combined with close collaboration between clinic and leadership. Who We're Looking For You are a specialist physician in anesthesia and intensive care with several years of clinical experience. Leadership experience and experience in operational development and organizational improvement are valued. Experience and interest in day surgery anesthesia and regional anesthesia are particularly valuable. You are communicative, well-organized, and have strong collaborative skills across professional boundaries. You drive work forward, make decisions, and have both the ability and willingness to further develop established practices. The position requires a thorough understanding of the entire perioperative process. You must be able to balance the demands of efficient, predictable patient flows with individualized care for patients with more complex needs. We seek someone curious about how modern anesthesia and new perioperative approaches can contribute to developing day surgery. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability and your ability to work with other professionals and departments to translate ideas into safe, practical patient care. We look forward to receiving your application!
