Job Description Job Duties The position involves research, teaching, and collaboration. The appointed individual is expected to contribute to strengthening research and teaching within the subject area. Over time, the appointee is expected to contribute to the department's operations by taking on various types of management tasks. The content and distribution of work tasks may change over time, but at least 50% of working time can be devoted to research. Research Activities The appointee is expected to establish their own research environment within computational biology, with a focus on mathematical modeling of ecological and evolutionary systems. The research should complement and connect to research currently conducted within the Department of Biology and thereby strengthen existing research directions through broadening or deepening. The connection to existing research directions can advantageously be combined with the development of new research areas. The appointee is expected to finance their research activities through grants from national (e.g., VR, FORMAS) and international (e.g., ERC, Horizon Europe) funding bodies, and through collaborations with government agencies or organizations working on similar issues. A startup package consisting of funding for one doctoral student and certain equipment will be offered. Teaching The appointee is expected to contribute to teaching at both basic and advanced levels, as well as development of courses and programs within the field of computational biology. In the short term, the appointee is expected to contribute to teaching in, for example, Modelling Biological Systems (BIOS13), Population and Community Ecology (BIOR69), Conservation Biology (BIOR83), Evolutionary Biology Patterns and Processes (BIOR89), Biological Modelling (EXTG11), and master's programs in computational science with focus on biology and/or bioinformatics (e.g., Bioinformatics and Sequence Analysis BINP11/17, Applied Bioinformatics BIOR93). The position includes supervision of both thesis projects and doctoral students. Over time, the teacher is expected to take course responsibility and contribute to the development of the faculty's new doctoral program in computational science. Collaboration The holder of the position is expected to collaborate with society by informing about their activities and, where appropriate, contributing to ensuring that research benefits society by developing existing and initiating new relevant collaboration activities at the department. Management Tasks No administrative or management tasks are directly linked to the position, but over time the holder of this position is expected to participate in such work at the department, institutional, and faculty levels. Qualifications To be eligible for appointment as a University Lecturer according to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 4, an individual must have demonstrated pedagogical skills and have a doctoral degree in biology or computational science, or equivalent scientific competence. The position requires higher education pedagogical training of at least five weeks, or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way. In exceptional cases, exceptions may be made from this requirement. Applicants lacking higher education pedagogical training must complete such training within two years of commencing employment. For teachers at Lund University, the general eligibility requirement is to be suitable and have the ability otherwise necessary to perform work tasks well. Evaluation Criteria Requirements for the position: The applicant must have documented scientific skills in analytical mathematical modeling of biological systems. The applicant must include a research plan in their application showing how the applicant's research profile and planned research can contribute to, complement, or collaborate with existing research within the Department of Biology. The applicant must have documented excellent ability to obtain national or international research grants. The applicant must have experience supervising students and doctoral students. The applicant must have varied and documented teaching experience. Documentation should consist of certificates from, for example, a head of department or director of studies. The applicant must be able to demonstrate good pedagogical ability and teaching skills. The applicant must have research experience at another higher education institution after obtaining their doctorate. The applicant must have excellent knowledge of English. Very good collaboration and communication skills. Meritorious for the position: Experience with other computational science methods such as population simulations, machine learning, or bioinformatics, is meritorious. Experience in course development and course leadership is meritorious. Experience in supervising postdoctoral researchers is highly meritorious. A broad international network is meritorious. Ability to collaborate with society and communicate science is meritorious. Documented skills and experience in management tasks is meritorious. Personal Qualities Desired personal qualities are creativity, strong drive, openness, perseverance, ability to share knowledge and collaborate within and outside academia, ability to respect your surroundings, and ability to provide constructive feedback. Application Format and Content We recommend that your application be written in English, as it may be reviewed by international experts. The application is presented according to the Natural Sciences Faculty's instructions for applicants for teaching positions. Upload as PDF files in the recruitment system. Please note that it is very important that you follow the application instructions. An incomplete application will be rejected.
