Within geomatics, teaching takes place at the undergraduate level, primarily within two 3-year programs: the Land Surveying Program with a focus on measurement and mapping technology, and the Engineering Program in Land Surveying Technology and Geographic IT, offered both on campus and at a distance. The geomatics subject currently has ten staff members working in education and research. The subject integrates knowledge and research approaches from various disciplines including information technology, computer science, geodesy, risk and environmental science, biology, and urban planning. Duties The position includes duties such as teaching, supervision, examination, and course development primarily at the undergraduate level. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the subject and department's development work related to education and collaboration with the surrounding community. Teaching takes place mainly at the undergraduate level in Swedish but may also include advanced-level courses in English to a limited extent. This includes primarily teaching and examination in existing courses on campus and at a distance within geographic IT. Qualifications To be eligible for employment as a University Lecturer in Geomatics, you must have demonstrated pedagogical skill in land surveying technology and geographic IT or other professional skill relevant to the subject matter and duties of the position. The position requires at least a professional degree of at least 180 higher education credits or a bachelor's degree within the field of the position. According to Karlstad University's employment regulations, teachers must have the personal qualities required to fulfill the position. You are expected to be able to teach in Swedish from the start of employment. Assessment Criteria The assessment will be based on the competencies required for the position's duties. Particular weight will be placed on pedagogical skill, subject competence within geographic IT, and demonstrated ability to develop teaching for campus and distance students. When selecting eligible applicants, particular weight will be given to: Pedagogical skill with experience in teaching, supervision, examination, and course responsibility within geomatics/geographic IT. Documented experience in developing courses and teaching modules for campus, distance, and hybrid education, including laboratory work and digital teaching components. Subject competence within geographic IT, particularly in programming and development of Python programming and Jupyter Notebooks. Experience with developing server-based geodata services and web cartography (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GeoJSON, Leaflet, OpenLayers, and REST/API). Personal qualities such as teamwork ability, organizational skills, dedication to the work, a positive and open attitude toward colleagues and students, and the ability to take own initiative and responsibility. When selecting eligible applicants, considerable weight will be given to documented knowledge and experience within several of the following areas: GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, FME, and QGIS) Spatial databases (PostGIS/PostgreSQL) Map projections, coordinate transformations, reference systems, and transformation software. Digital cartography and map production Spatial modeling and analysis within risk assessment and environmental applications. Terms This is a permanent full-time position (100%) with start date January 1, 2027. A probationary period may be applied.
