What does a train traffic controller do?
This is a profession for you who likes to have control of the situation and where no two days are the same. You work on-site at the traffic control center together with experienced colleagues with the common goal of ensuring that both freight and passengers arrive safely and on time. To succeed, cooperation, community, and teamwork are extremely important. The work is performed via computer and telephone, and your decisions affect thousands of travelers every day.
Working as a train traffic controller involves, among other things, that you:
- Control and monitor railway traffic in real-time, around the clock throughout the year.
- Handle disruptions and delays, prioritize and make decisions that affect railway traffic.
- Follow regulations and safety procedures for safe railway traffic.
- Collaborate with, among others, colleagues at the traffic control center, customers, train drivers, and emergency personnel.
- Work shifts according to a rotating schedule.
Qualifications
What is required to become a train traffic controller?
This role suits you if you have good analytical skills and approach problems in a structured and solution-oriented manner. As a person, you are stable and easily shift pace when things happen. You remain calm and make independent, well-founded decisions even in pressured situations. You have a high safety awareness, are thorough, take responsibility for your tasks and your learning. You are a team player who communicates clearly and values collaboration. Your ability to translate theory into practice is crucial for successfully completing the basic training.
To become a train traffic controller, you must:
- Have studied at upper secondary school or have equivalent knowledge from other studies (e.g., folk high school, Komvux, vocational training).
- Have good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish.
- Be able and willing to work shifts (day, evening, night, weekends, and public holidays).
It is an advantage but not a requirement if you have:
- Experience working with rapid pace changes.
- Experience working in a role where it has been important to follow procedures and regulations.
- Experience working where safety has been in focus.
- Experience communicating orally via telephone and digitally via computer at work.
- Valid driver's license for a car.
Additional Information
Shift Work
All train traffic controllers work alternating day, evening, night, weekends, and public holidays according to a rotating schedule. It is important that you consider your ability to work shifts before submitting your application.
Basic Training and Trainee Employment
You will be employed as a trainee with trainee salary (approximately 25,000 - 28,000 kr per month) and will undergo approximately one year of paid training starting in January 2027. The training consists of 5-7 weeks of theoretical courses on-site at Trafikverksskolan in Ängelholm and practical training at your traffic control center. About the Recruitment Process
Several elements of the recruitment process will require your physical presence as a candidate, which means that in certain recruitment stages you will need to take time off from any job or studies to continue participating in the recruitment process.
Recruitment day, which includes, among other things, work tests and work-related exercises, will be held on-site in Boden in week 37 (September 7-8).
Individual psychological assessment will be conducted digitally between weeks 38-40.
Final interviews are planned to be conducted digitally or on-site in Boden during weeks 40-41.
