The Planning and Economics Department provides support to the entire operational area of planning, economics, and procurement, both strategically and operatively. We work with operational and financial management through operational planning, internal governance and control, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, follow-up, and analysis. In the procurement and purchasing area, we support the entire university's purchasing process.

Duties
Mälardalens University is seeking an Accounting Manager and unit head who wants to lead and develop the accounting function. The role is part of ongoing efforts to further develop the accounting operations and may, provided that necessary decisions are made, also include tasks as a unit head for a future accounting unit.
As a manager, you are responsible for operations, staff, and finances within your area of responsibility. You lead and motivate employees in a collaborative spirit and contribute to developing a positive and safe work environment and culture within the unit and department. You actively support employee engagement and clear accountability through learning-based approaches and dialogue-driven follow-up.
As Accounting Manager, you are responsible for ensuring efficient, legally sound, and quality-assured accounting and for driving the development of working methods and processes in this area. You combine hands-on, developmental leadership with operational tasks in daily work. You are part of the department's management team and report to the department head. The role involves close collaboration with operations and other support functions, where you contribute to a holistic perspective and create good conditions for coordination and efficiency, and develop and maintain systematic dialogue with faculties and departments within your area of responsibility.
Mälardalens University conducts education and research in extensive and complex operations with significant externally funded research. Nearly half of research activities are financed with external funds, which places high demands on quality, transparency, and efficiency in accounting, follow-up, and financial management.
In this role, you work both strategically and operatively to:
• ensure high quality in accounting and reporting
• develop and streamline financial processes
• actively participate in developing internal accounting at the university
• actively participate in the university's digitalization efforts in the financial area
• ensure appropriate and efficient system support
• drive change and improvement initiatives
• strengthen unified working methods within the organization and ensure these are developed from a clear user perspective
You also have an important role as an advisor and sounding board on financial matters and actively contribute to the authority's continued development.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with:
• Bachelor's degree in Economics or equivalent education that the employer deems equivalent,
• Previous experience as a manager/leader with operational, financial, and/or personnel responsibility in an area that the employer deems relevant,
• Several years of experience in public sector accounting and solid knowledge in this field,
• Experience leading major change initiatives, such as operational development supported by digitalization, system implementations, or systematically structured quality work,
• Excellent knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written,
• Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written,
• Strong IT skills and experience working with large financial systems.
Meritorious
For this position, it is meritorious to have:
• Previous experience with accounting and financial work from a university or college,
• Experience leading major change initiatives, such as digitalization, system implementations, or structured quality work,
• Network within the higher education sector.
