Popis:

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. It has approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our commitment to understand, explain, and improve our world and human conditions. Research and education at the Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences (MGeo) address fundamental and applied questions about Earth's past, present, and future climate and environment, including human interaction with nature and consequences for human well-being. MGeo develops and applies cutting-edge methods, models, and techniques in environmental science, Quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geographic information science (GIS), and computational science in environment and health to study processes ranging from the microscopic to the planetary across all timescales. Job Responsibilities Demographic vegetation models are some of our most advanced and promising tools for understanding how the world's forests are likely to change in the future. This position will contribute to the use of such models in two projects funded by the EU research and innovation program Horizon Europe. To be able to rely on the demographic vegetation models' predictions, they need to be thoroughly compared with real-world observations. In the AI4PEX project, we have compiled extensive data to test such models, as well as a set of methods for this evaluation. The employee will conduct analyses in which simulation results from an international ensemble of demographic vegetation models are compared with this data. In the OBSGESSION project, we use the demographic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS to investigate how disturbances, particularly bark beetle attacks, affect Europe's forests. The employee will conduct simulations with LPJ-GUESS and analyze the results. In both projects, the employee will also prepare reports, written documentation, and archive code related to the work, as well as contribute to authoring a peer-reviewed scientific article in the field. The work involves developing analysis code, interpreting model results, and discussions with collaborators around the world. The exact work plan will be established in consultation with the supervisors. The position also includes associated administrative and communication tasks. Qualifications Master's degree in a quantitative natural science field Very good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English At least three months of experience with data analysis using code-based methods from either work or thesis work during university studies. Meritorious Qualifications Good knowledge and experience with software for data analysis, such as Python, R, or Matlab Knowledge level in forest ecology and forest dynamics Ability to work independently and autonomously Strong organizational skills, including willingness to participate and contribute to activities within the broader research community. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given to collaboration skills, how your experience and competencies complement and strengthen the administrative operations of the department/institution, and how you can contribute to its future development. Employment Terms Fixed-term special appointment (SÄVA) for full-time (100%) employment for 12 months. Desired start date as soon as possible by agreement. Application Instructions The application must be written in English and compiled in a PDF file containing: A personal letter in which you motivate your interest and suitability for the position (maximum one page), CV, Contact information for at least two references, Copies of certificates/grades that you wish to reference. We welcome your application! At the Faculty of Science, research and education are conducted in astronomy, biology, physics, geoscience, chemistry, mathematics, medical radiation physics, environmental science, and physical geography. Activities are conducted in the northern university area. The Faculty has approximately 1,900 students, 330 doctoral students, and 730 employees.
