The Swedish Language subject area at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is in a strong development phase. The subject has examination rights up to advanced level. Teaching is provided through standalone courses, courses in teacher education programs, master's programs, and commissioned education. Currently, 10 people work within the subject on full-time and part-time basis, including one professor. Research within the subject has particular strengths in literacy, students' writing development, and subject didactics and educational research.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include overall responsibility for research within the subject, conducting own research, teaching, and supervision. The Professor is expected to contribute to developing the subject's research profile and to initiate, lead, and conduct research projects, including applications for external research funding. The role also includes supervising at various levels and contributing to the development of the research environment through collegial collaboration and research-informed education. The Professor is also responsible for developing the subject's role within teacher education with particular focus on subject didactics research and education, and the higher education pedagogical initiative Skrivlyftet at Mid Sweden University. Administrative tasks may also be included. The position includes conducting own research in accordance with the Faculty Board's guidelines for professors.
Qualifications
To be appointed as a professor, one must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence. Furthermore, qualification requirements as described in Mid Sweden University's employment regulations and in the Faculty of Humanities' rules and guidelines apply.
For professor qualification, higher education pedagogy training comprising at least 15 higher education credits, or at least 10 weeks of full-time studies is required. If this is lacking, the appointed professor must achieve this within two years from the time of appointment.
Other Requirements
A particular requirement for qualification is documented scientific competence in Swedish language or a related area of relevance to the position. The ability to supervise students at various levels is an additional requirement. Since teaching within the subject is conducted in Swedish, the applicant is expected to have documented very good ability to teach and communicate in Swedish.
Personal Qualities
The applicant is expected to have well-developed collaboration skills and be able to contribute constructively in collegial settings, both within the department and in external research environments. The role also requires good communicative skills, both orally and in writing, with the ability to adapt messages to different audiences. Furthermore, flexibility and ability to handle changing conditions in education and research activities are valued. The applicant should also demonstrate a structured and responsible work approach and professional judgment that supports long-term quality in teaching, research, and collaboration.
Assessment Criteria
When appointing a professor, the degree of competence required for qualification for appointment shall apply. Equal care is given to assessing pedagogical competence as scientific competence. Administrative and other relevant competence may also be weighted.
In the assessment, weight will be placed on:
Research experience with issues concerning literacy, particularly with focus on academic literacy in higher education.
Research experience in subject didactics of issues concerning reading and writing development, with relevance to teacher education.
Documented ability to conduct and publish research in Swedish.
Particularly meriting for the position:
Experience leading larger research projects
Experience with national and international research collaboration
Ability to obtain external research funding

Preparation of the employment follows the procedures specified in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and proceeds in accordance with Mid Sweden University's employment regulations.
