Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading academic institutions. With approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö, we are united in our mission to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's living conditions. This position focuses on GIS and the resilience of transport systems in relation to extreme weather events, with particular emphasis on compiling and evaluating existing scientific knowledge. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a knowledge overview of how extreme weather events affect transport infrastructure, mobility, accessibility, and transport-related vulnerability, as well as what methods and strategies exist to strengthen the resilience of transport systems. Job Responsibilities As a postdoctoral researcher, your primary responsibility will be to conduct research. Teaching may be included in your duties, but not exceeding one-fifth of your working time. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of university pedagogical training. Specific responsibilities include: Review, assess, and synthesize existing research on how extreme weather events impact transport infrastructure, transport networks, travel behavior, mobility, and accessibility. Develop a publicly accessible Web-GIS platform to explore and analyze the knowledge base by geography, type of weather-related hazard, infrastructure, population groups, and climate adaptation measures. Conduct studies to assess and strengthen transport system resilience using GIS, complex network analysis, and machine learning. Simulate human mobility in response to extreme weather events (e.g., floods and heat waves) using agent-based modeling. Publish research results at scientific conferences and in high-impact scientific journals. Supervise bachelor's and master's theses. Perform administrative tasks related to the above responsibilities. Qualifications To be eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent foreign degree within the field of the position, obtained no more than three years before the date of the employment decision. If there are special circumstances, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Additional Requirements: Research competence in GIS, including documented knowledge of GIS, spatial analysis, spatial modeling, and GeoAI. Experience and competence in Web-GIS development and strong knowledge of central technologies in the field, such as web interface development, web cartography, spatial databases, and web services. Experience and competence in graph-based deep learning for intelligent transport infrastructure and transport systems. Experience and competence in simulation and prediction of human mobility using agent-based modeling and deep learning methods. Very strong Python programming skills for processing, modeling, and data mining of geospatial data. Scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals of high quality within a relevant research field, with particular emphasis on experience publishing scientific review articles. Very strong ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English. Good collaboration skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment. Very strong knowledge of English, both spoken and written. Evaluation Criteria This is a research-focused merit-based position intended as an initial step in your career. The evaluation of applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as a researcher. Particular weight will be given to scientific competence within the field. The following will form the basis for evaluation when appointing a postdoctoral researcher: Good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research based on the above requirements. Additional meritorious evaluation criteria include: Knowledge and experience in cloud technologies and solutions for monitoring and automation. Experience with foundation models and Large Language Models (LLMs). Teaching experience in GIS-related courses at the bachelor's and master's levels. Experience supervising bachelor's and master's theses. Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, initiative and independence, and how your experience and competence are assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development. Terms of Employment The position is time-limited to a maximum of 2 years at 100% full-time. The employment is time-limited in accordance with the agreement "Agreement on Time-Limited Employment as a Postdoctoral Researcher," between labor market parties dated 2022-02-01 (Swedish Agency for Government Employers, OFR's, and Saco-S). Desired start date: 2026-11-01. Application Instructions Applications should be written in English and include: Merit list/CV including publication list. A general description of previous research work and future research interests (maximum three pages). Contact information for at least two references. Copy of your doctoral degree certificate and any other certificates/grades you wish to reference. We welcome your application! At the Faculty of Science, research and education are conducted in astronomy, biology, physics, geosciences, chemistry, mathematics, medical radiation physics, environmental science, and physical geography. Activities are carried out in the northern university area. The Faculty has approximately 1,900 students, 330 doctoral students, and 730 employees. Due to government procurement regulations, we do not accept contact from advertising agents, recruitment, and staffing companies. Open to Everyone We focus on your competence, not your other circumstances. We are open to adapting the role or workplace to suit your needs.
