Postdoctoral Researcher in Plant Evolutionary Genomics and Pangenomics Department of Plant Biology About the Job A postdoctoral position in plant evolutionary genomics is available in the Yant Lab at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala. Yant Lab develops computational and genomic methods to understand evolution, adaptation, genome dynamics, and whole-genome duplication across diverse plant systems (see https://www.yantlab.net/). The project is funded by Formas and aims to contribute to the restoration of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior), which is threatened by ash dieback disease. The successful candidate will contribute to developing the first Swedish-focused European ash pangenome by integrating long-read genome assemblies with population-based whole-genome sequencing to understand the genetic basis for disease resistance and local adaptation across Europe. The project combines large-scale population genomics, graph-based pangenomics, structural variant identification, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and evolutionary genomics using modern long-read sequencing and advanced computational genomic methods. The successful candidate will work closely with collaborators at other SLU campuses, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and other European research partners, and will contribute to both methodological development and new biological knowledge. The position offers an opportunity to work at the frontier of plant evolutionary genomics while the results directly contribute to restoration and conservation of forest ecosystems. Your Background We seek a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in botany, evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, plant biology, or a related field that the employer deems equivalent. The applicant should have a strong scientific publication record relative to their career level and documented ability to conduct independent research. The ideal candidate has experience with all of the following areas: large-scale population genomics, demographic inference, and evolutionary genomics graph-based pangenomics and structural variant analysis, preferably in plants genotype–environment association analyses (GEA/EAA) or genome-wide association studies (GWAS) programming in Python and extensive experience working in Linux and HPC environments population genomics across environmental gradients, including demographic inference and genotype–environment association analyses Experience with long-read sequencing, structural variant analysis, graph-based genome analysis, and plant genomics is advantageous but not required. The successful candidate is expected to be a good team player who drives the project with creativity, independence, and scientific curiosity. Excellent ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, is required. Since postdoctoral positions are merit-based appointments, priority will be given to applicants who completed their PhD no more than three years ago. About Us The Department of Plant Biology offers a creative and stimulating international research environment and is one of the departments within Uppsala BioCenter. The department's research encompasses model organisms, agricultural crops, forest trees, and bioenergy crops. Our primary research areas include plant interactions with microorganisms and other environmental stresses, plant growth and development, biotechnology and metabolic engineering, regulation of gene expression, population genetics, genome analysis, and development of breeding systems.
