The research subject Water and Sanitation Engineering at the Department of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, is seeking a driven and engaged postdoctoral researcher focused on how sustainable sediment management from stormwater can contribute to improved water quality. The Water and Sanitation Engineering research group has a strong position in research and education within urban water systems, primarily in the areas of stormwater and wastewater systems. The group includes approximately 50 people consisting of several senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors, and approximately 20 doctoral students. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. The group's overall goal is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems. For more information, see http://www.ltu.se/vatten Research Area Description Water and Sanitation Engineering encompasses the entire urban water system (stormwater, drinking water, and wastewater) with respect to collection, transport, and treatment as well as organization/planning. The research aims at good economic and environmental outcomes, wise resource utilization, and citizen safety and health. Project Description Stormwater transports a variety of pollutants from urban environments, which presents major challenges for the protection of surface waters. Urban stormwater facilities such as stormwater inlets and ponds are important for addressing these challenges. Over time, the accumulation of sediment and associated contaminants in these facilities leads to impaired function, creating the need for regular and environmentally safe maintenance operations. As the use of urban stormwater facilities increases, the amount of sediment and associated contaminants retained in these systems will continue to grow, which reinforces both management challenges and potential environmental risks. Fully characterizing these challenges within a broader technical and socioeconomic context is crucial to ensure that sediment accumulation prevents—rather than merely delays—discharges to coastal environments. Meeting this need is the project's central objective and directly addresses municipalities', authorities', and practitioners' needs for evidence-based tools, clear governance and legal guidance, environmentally sustainable maintenance methods, and long-term sustainable financing models. The project thus contributes to reducing land-based impacts on coastal and marine environments through a system-wide transformation. Work within the project includes evaluation and development of technical solutions for operation and maintenance of urban stormwater facilities as well as detailed characterization of waste streams generated by maintenance operations. Within the project, the postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with municipalities and international research partners and communicate results to both industry and international researchers through LTU's well-established competence networks. Duties The duties of a postdoctoral researcher are varied. You work independently planning and conducting your studies as well as writing scientific articles, in collaboration with industry and other project partners. In between, you participate in seminars and conferences both in Sweden and internationally. You may also have the opportunity to try your hand at teaching and administrative tasks may also occur (up to 20% of full-time). You will have two supervisors by your side. Qualifications To be eligible for employment, a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign qualification in Water and Sanitation Engineering, Water Resources, Civil Engineering, or something deemed equivalent is required. It is meritorious if your degree was completed no more than three years before the final application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, a doctoral degree completed earlier may be considered, for example due to various types of statutory leave. The applicant needs to have the ability to work independently, take initiative, and independently initiate new research areas. Knowledge of English is necessary to present research results at international conferences and in scientific publications. It is meritorious if you have knowledge and experience in: Stormwater management, urban pollution sources, and contaminants' environmental behavior Experience with sampling, analytical chemistry, laboratory work, and statistics as well as working with large environmentally related measurement datasets Knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meritorious, as it facilitates communication with stakeholders and participation in teaching activities. Possession of a driver's license is also meritorious, as it facilitates research work. You must be able to provide contact information for two reference persons upon request.
