Employment Information
Type of Employment: Fixed-term employment
Employment Period/Start Date: By agreement
Extent: Full-time
Number of Positions: 1
Deadline for Applications: August 9, 2026
Location: Eskilstuna
Department: Engineering Sciences
Job Responsibilities
A postdoctoral position aims to provide an opportunity, after completion of a doctoral degree, to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further qualification. The employment can be fixed-term for a maximum of 3 years.
The position primarily involves research where the candidate will independently plan and conduct scientific studies within the field of smart and portable automation. The position will be carried out within the framework of the research profile MARC (Mälardalen Research and Competence Centre for Future Manufacturing), which means that work will be conducted in close collaboration with industrial partners and other researchers within the profile.
Within MARC, research focuses on future sustainable and flexible production systems, where smart and portable automation are central. The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of new methods, techniques, and prototypes for portable and reconfigurable automation, and to explore how these solutions can be integrated into industrial environments with requirements for flexibility, quality, and resource efficiency. The work may include experimental research in laboratory and industrial environments, system development, analysis of production flows, and co-production of knowledge together with business partners. As MARC is a collaboration profile with strong connections to the region's companies, the candidate will also participate in project meetings, workshops, and joint activities where industrial relevance and implementability are central elements.
The postdoctoral role includes scientific writing of articles, dissemination, and oral presentation of research results. An important part of dissemination is actively working with industrial applications in close collaboration with industrial partners.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to take personal responsibility for planning and conducting your studies, take your own initiatives to develop your ideas and knowledge, and be able to collaborate with others both within and outside academia. Teaching or other assignments may be included in the position up to a maximum of 20%.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will also be part of the research group Production Development, where you are expected to contribute to the group's development.
Eligibility Requirements
We are looking for you who have completed a doctoral degree in production engineering, mechanical engineering, automation, robotics, or another relevant technical field, no later than three years before the application deadline. You have not previously held a postdoctoral position in the same or related subject area at MDU that exceeded one year.
Furthermore, you must have:
Documented experimental research experience, such as work in laboratory, test bed, or industrial environments
Experience with industrial robots, collaborative robots, or portable robot platforms
Experience in programming and configuring control systems for automation and robotics, including relevant programming languages such as PLC, Python, C/C++, MATLAB, ROS, or equivalent
Ability to work independently in the research process, including planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting scientific studies
Ability to collaborate and cooperate with people at different levels within and outside academia, such as students, colleagues, and industrial representatives
Very good oral and written communication skills in English, including documented ability in scientific writing
Assessment Criteria
For this position, particular weight will be given to:
Knowledge of or experience with investment projects concerning industrial robots, collaborative robots, or portable robot platforms is meritorious
