Postdoctoral Researcher in Atom Probe Tomography for Sustainable Metals
Job Responsibilities The Hultgren Laboratory at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), is announcing a postdoctoral position in atom probe tomography (APT). The successful candidate will join our materials characterization team and conduct research aimed at advancing the sustainability of metallic materials. The Hultgren Laboratory is equipped with an EIKOS-UV atom probe instrument (laser and voltage pulse modes), funded through the Hugo Carlsson Foundation under Jernkontoret, KTH's research infrastructure, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Our research focuses on sustainable metallic materials, with ongoing projects encompassing hydrogen-tolerant alloys for fossil-free energy systems, metallic materials for vehicle industry electrification, alloy design compatible with high recycled material content, and nano-precipitation and trace element behavior in various alloy systems. The postdoctoral researcher will perform APT characterization and data analysis as a central part of individual and collaborative projects, and apply complementary techniques to establish process-structure-property correlations in metallic materials. The role also involves contributing to the development of new alloys and processing routes through advanced microstructural understanding, collaborating with academic and industrial partners in Sweden and internationally, and supporting student mentoring and dissemination of results through publications and conferences. Qualifications Requirements Completed PhD or equivalent foreign degree in materials science or related field for the proposed research. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Documented experience with APT characterization of metallic materials, including sample preparation, data collection, and reconstruction/analysis. Ability to express yourself very well in English, both orally and in writing, as this will be required in daily work. You are self-driven with a strong ability to take initiative and drive projects. As a person, you have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills and enjoy taking responsibility. You have strong collaborative abilities, including the ability to lead and support research. Meritorious At the application deadline, no more than three years since the PhD or equivalent foreign degree was obtained. Background in physical metallurgy and phase transformations in the solid state. Experience with complementary characterization techniques (e.g., FIB-SEM, TEM). Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality. We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. Become Part of KTH KTH shapes the future through education, research, and innovation. As a leading international technical university, we play an active role in driving and participating in the transition to a sustainable society. Here you are offered the opportunity to grow and develop in a creative and dynamic workplace with good working conditions and benefits. Application You apply through KTH's recruitment system. As an applicant, you bear primary responsibility for ensuring your application is complete when submitted. The application should contain: CV including relevant work experience and knowledge, especially within APT and metallurgy. Copy of degree certificate and grades from your previous university studies. Translations to English or Swedish if the original documents are not issued in one of these languages. Brief statement of how you fit the position, and what your research interests and future goals are. Maximum two pages. The application must be received by KTH no later than the application deadline at midnight, CET/CEST (Central European Time/Central European Summer Time). About the Employment The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of two years. A postdoctoral position is a time-limited merit-based employment focused primarily on research, intended as a first career step after completing a doctorate.
