Do you speak Lule Sami?
Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Sami are national minority languages in Sweden. Students who belong to one of the national minorities have the right to instruction in their native language, regardless of whether it is a living language at home or not. This means that the student has the right to study the language even if it is a beginner language.
Umeå Municipality WANTS MORE when it comes to developing instruction in the national minority languages, with a special focus on preschool and younger children. An extensive development initiative is underway based on finding successful language models for instruction in and on the national minority language for both first and second language speakers.
We are now looking for you who wants to help our students continue to develop their language, culture, and identity!
Employment Form
The position is a fixed-term part-time employment at 40%, with a planned start date of August 17, 2026, through June 9, 2027. Remote work for teachers living elsewhere in Sweden is possible, and the extent may change.
Your Responsibilities
As a native language teacher, you will instruct students from preschool through grade 9 together with other native language teachers. Instruction comprises 120 minutes per week and follows the Swedish national curriculum.
Your role may include the following responsibilities:
Plan, implement, and follow up on instruction in the relevant language
Assess and assign grades in accordance with applicable regulations
Teach students in both in-person and remote instruction (as needed)
Contribute to developing instruction based on our guiding principles: language, culture, and identity
Collaborate with colleagues within our Language Hub for National Minority Languages
Instruction takes place at the student's home school in preschool through grade 3. From grade 4 onwards, instruction may be at another school—in that case we offer bus passes as needed. Remote instruction may occur from grade 2 onwards, particularly in outlying areas.
About You
We are looking for someone who is creative, self-directed, and flexible, and who thrives in a dynamic work environment. You are curious and have a strong desire to both contribute to development and develop yourself. As a person, you easily build good relationships with students, guardians, and colleagues. Furthermore, you have strong collaboration skills, are responsive, and can communicate and handle different situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. You take responsibility for your work tasks and treat others in an accommodating and respectful way. We place great importance on your personal suitability.
