Environmental Specialist / Tree Safety Manager in Railway We are seeking an experienced and independent environmental specialist with a strong background in railways, forestry, and environmental matters for a long-term consulting assignment within Swedish railway infrastructure. About the Assignment We are seeking an experienced environmental specialist with a strong background in railways, forestry, and environmental matters for a long-term consulting assignment within Swedish railway infrastructure. The role combines environmental expertise with practical work on tree safety and vegetation management near railways. You will, among other things, assess environmental considerations, drive regulatory matters and permits, and support project organizations and contractors in areas with special natural, cultural, or environmental values. The work takes place both independently and together with project management, municipalities, authorities, property owners, and other experts. Key Responsibilities Work as an environmental specialist and tree safety manager in areas where special environmental considerations are required. Prepare consultation documents, permits, applications, and other submissions to municipalities and authorities. Handle shoreline protection, habitat protection, Natura 2000, cultural heritage matters, and other protected areas. Conduct consultations with municipalities, authorities, property owners, and other stakeholders. Assess appropriate measures in forest stands together with other experts. Support contractors when working in stands where special consideration is required. Follow up on completed environmental measures. Provide ongoing environmental support to project management. Participate in design and planning of tree safety and felling measures. Attend digital meetings and, when needed, in-person meetings and site visits at various locations in Sweden. Requirements for the Role For this role, you must meet all of the following requirements: Forestry education equivalent to a forestry-focused natural resources program, or equivalent documented forestry competence. At least 120 credits in environmental science education or equivalent documented environmental competence. At least 40 credits in geoscience or equivalent documented competence. At least 40 credits in nature conservation biology or equivalent documented competence. Experience in preparing at least one environmental impact assessment (EIA). At least 5 years of experience in handling and preparing matters within: - consultations according to the Environmental Code Chapter 12, Section 6 - consultations according to the Cultural Heritage Act Chapter 2, Section 10 - shoreline protection exemptions and permits/authorization related to Natura 2000. At least 10 completed matters within the above areas. Experience in reaching agreements with municipalities on measures within detailed planning areas. Experience in environmental support in railway-related projects during investigation, planning, design, construction, and implementation phases. BASÄVISTA certification, authorization to work independently in railway tracks, or equivalent higher authorization. At least 2 years of experience applying specific environmental considerations in tree safety management of railways. Ability to travel within Sweden for site visits and in-person meetings. Meritorious Experience It is meritorious if you have particularly broad experience in: Nature reserves, Natura 2000, and habitat protection. Protected trees and nature value assessments. Work at the intersection of environment, forestry, and railway maintenance. Authority dialogue and complex permit processes. Development of procedures, templates, and methods within environmental matters. Design or management of forestry measures near railway facilities. Who We Are Looking For You are a senior and independent specialist who is confident in making professional environmental assessments and driving matters forward independently. The role requires you to switch between authority contacts, documentation, advisory work, and practical assessments in the field. You need to be structured, analytical, and communicative, and able to explain complex environmental matters in a clear and pragmatic way. Work Location and Arrangement The assignment is full-time, approximately 40 hours per week. Office work can largely be performed remotely. The role also involves travel and site visits at various locations in Sweden and in-person meetings when the work requires it. Working hours are normally during weekdays. When working in or near railway environments, current safety rules and requirements such as safety clothing apply. You must also be able to follow applicable confidentiality and information security requirements and undergo relevant onboarding before the assignment begins.
