About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating existing ones, and expanding, and we are now seeking more employees. Description VO Uppsala/Västerås is planning to open an additional facility with approximately 40 remand prison places, Ulleråker Remand Prison. Ulleråker Remand Prison is located in Uppsala's old hospital area. Uppsala Remand Prison is co-located with the Police and the Prosecution Authority in central Uppsala. The facility has 60 remand prison places. Åby Institution is an open prison located in Gunsta outside Uppsala. In total, the operational area has over 150 employees who work together to secure society and reduce recidivism. As an employee, you have the opportunity to work at all operational locations. Job Description Do you want to contribute to a safer and more secure society? As a correctional officer at a prison and remand facility, you are the foundation of security work. You work in a team with other professions to maintain a safe and secure operation and to motivate clients toward a life without crime. The tasks at prisons and remand facilities are varied. Security work such as supervision and searches are combined with care work including daily conversations, motivational work, and release planning. In remand facilities, a large part of the work involves breaking isolation for remanded individuals in order to counteract the negative consequences of isolation. A person may be remanded for a long time without meeting anyone other than their lawyer and the remand facility staff, which places special demands on you as a correctional officer. It is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of human beings, respect for the individual, and the belief that people can develop and change. A large part of the work at Uppsala Remand Prison focuses on youth under 18 years old. The focus will be on creating safe environments that promote reintegration into society. Otherwise, children's rights during the enforcement of sentences must be safeguarded in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Through client-centered work, we create a meaningful existence in an otherwise adult and security-focused environment. The probationary employment begins with three weeks of orientation. After a few months of service, we will plan when you should begin the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's mandatory basic training. The training comprises eight weeks and takes place during paid working time. Assessment is ongoing before the probationary employment transitions to permanent employment after six months. Qualifications Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be confident, stable, have good self-awareness, good judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operation, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required. We are seeking someone who has: Complete upper secondary school education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not equivalent to employment Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing Good computer skills B-category driving license It is also meritorious to have: Work experience from correctional services, security work, social care, psychiatry, or health and care work Knowledge in relevant areas, for example behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management Relevant language skills Work experience working with children and youth in social services, SiS, school, or other activities that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant Experience working with children and youth who have neurodevelopmental variations (NPF) Experience working with youth Conditions The Swedish Prison and Probation Service operates around the clock, year-round. You will work days, evenings, and weekends. Night shifts also occur.
