About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now recruiting more staff members. Our most important goal is to reduce reoffending – to break the cycle of crime. When we succeed, society becomes safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation services, jails, and inmate transport. The Vänersborg operational area consists of two prisons in Vänersborg and one jail in Uddevalla. Östragård Prison is an open facility with capacity for 192 inmates. Brinkeberg Prison is a closed facility with capacity for 144, and Uddevalla Jail has 57 places. We are a dynamic organization, and our staff includes correctional officers, administrators, nurses, cooks, teachers, production managers, and supervisors, among others. Job Responsibilities As a correctional officer, you will be part of a team where you have daily contact with inmates. You will work at the jail or at one of our prisons. Working at a jail involves a focus on care and security and is a job with clear procedures. Some people are held in jail for extended periods and only meet with their lawyer and staff members. This places special demands on you as a correctional officer. Working at a prison is varied: care work, supervision, searches, and security work are combined with release planning and counseling and motivational work. You will start your employment at the workplace where you will receive a three-week introduction. After a period of service, you will be offered a place in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic training program, which is mandatory and comprises 8 weeks. You will receive salary throughout your entire training period. During the probationary period, continuous evaluations will be conducted regarding your suitability for permanent employment. Qualifications Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be confident, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you run the operations, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You must be able to act physically when required. For us, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humanitarian outlook, respect for the individual, and belief in people's will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect you and others. Furthermore, through your approach, you are expected to contribute to everyone being treated fairly. We place great emphasis on personal suitability. We are looking for someone who has: Complete upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment Good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written Good computer skills Category B driver's license It is also meritious to have: Work experience from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's core operations Work experience from security work, social care, psychiatry, or health and care work Knowledge within relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management Relevant language skills Other Information The Swedish Prison and Probation Service has chosen to remove the personal letter and replaced it with selection questions that are relevant to the position.
