About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now seeking additional staff members. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the cycle of crime. When we succeed, society becomes safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation services, remand facilities, and inmate transportation. Our Stockholm West operational area in the scenic Ekerö municipality encompasses the open prison Svartsjö and the semi-open women's prison Färingsö, as well as the Färingsö remand facility. Approximately 170 staff members and ten managers administer, lead, and develop operations that accommodate around 270 inmates. The largest occupational group is correctional officers, but we also have healthcare professionals, administrative staff, educators, production managers, and others. The inmates are engaged in education, various treatment programs, or woodworking, handicraft industries, packaging, and assembly. The inmates also operate an organic farm with grain cultivation and animal husbandry. Both prisons are within walking distance of each other and are accessible by bus or car. At both facilities, you park free of charge in our staff parking area. Job Description As a correctional officer, you are the foundation of security work. You work in a team with other professionals to maintain a safe and secure operation and to motivate inmates toward a crime-free life. The role of correctional officer involves a structured and routine-based approach with risk assessment and security awareness in focus. Clear routines are a natural part of your daily work. You are the one who opens cell doors in the morning and locks them in the evening, and you escort inmates to work and education. You have daily contact with inmates to understand their well-being, and you are part of release preparation. The work is varied, and there are many opportunities for development for those who wish to grow within the agency. There will also be some administrative tasks. Your probationary employment is for six months and begins with three weeks of local orientation at the workplace, followed by work in your regular position for a few months. After this, we will also schedule your participation in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's mandatory eight-week basic training. You receive a salary throughout the training period. We conduct ongoing assessments of your work, and if everything goes well, your probationary employment will be converted to a permanent position after six months. Qualifications Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operation, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. It is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and belief that people can develop and change. The position requires that you have good physical fitness to handle situations that may arise at work and to complete the physical elements included in the training. We are seeking someone who has: Complete secondary education or other education combined with work experience Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing Good computer skills It is advantageous if you have: Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management Work experience from correctional services, service occupations, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and welfare work Language skills beyond Swedish Employment Scope We are primarily seeking someone who wants to work full-time, but we also offer the possibility of part-time work in the form of temporary employment.
