About the PositionThe Unit for Demography and Aging Research - CEDAR, together with Várdduo - Center for Sámi Research, is recruiting a Communications Officer. The position is organizationally placed at CEDAR, with work tasks divided equally (50 percent each) between CEDAR and Várdduo. Physical presence at both units is required. The position is full-time and permanent. A six-month probationary period may be applied. Start date is 2026-10-01 or by agreement. Work location is Umeå. About the UnitsThe Unit for Demography and Aging Research - CEDAR at the Faculty of Social Sciences has the mission to build, manage, and make accessible demographic and historical databases, conduct research on demography and aging, and strengthen the connections between education, research, and infrastructure at the university. The unit has three sections: one working with infrastructure and databases, one focused on research, and one support section assisting the other two. CEDAR also hosts two of the Swedish Research Council's national research infrastructures, CORS and SwedPop. Approximately 46 staff members and 30 researchers work at CEDAR across locations in Haparanda, Jörn, and Umeå. Várdduo serves as a meeting place for researchers and doctoral students from various disciplines whose research has Sámi or indigenous-related connections. The unit provides an inspiring research environment and serves as a valuable platform for creative intellectual exchange that enriches research in various ways. As a unique competence center for Sámi research in Sweden, research communication and collaboration are central to the unit's activities. Staff members at the unit include teachers/researchers and administrative personnel, so you will work closely with all employees. About YouWe are looking for an experienced communications professional with excellent ability to work with research communication in collaboration with researchers, society, and other relevant stakeholders. You are confident in your professional role and capable of independently planning, implementing, and developing communication work in research-oriented environments. You have a good understanding of how academic research is conducted and organized, and the ability to quickly grasp scientific texts, research results, and complex research projects. You can translate research into clear, relevant, and audience-adapted communication for both academic and broader audiences in a pedagogical and engaging manner. As a person, you are initiative-taking, organized, and relationship-building. You easily establish trusting collaborations with researchers and colleagues and thrive in an academic environment. ResponsibilitiesAs Communications Officer at CEDAR and Várdduo, you will be responsible for coordinating internal and external communications, with a focus on research and scientific communication in national and international contexts. You will develop and implement communication initiatives that make research visible, accessible, and relevant to various audiences, such as decision-makers, the research community, and civil society. Your work includes producing editorial content, such as popular science articles, research news, and researcher profiles, as well as developing and publishing content on web platforms, social media, and newsletters. You are also responsible for updating and maintaining the units' internal and external websites, supporting researchers in communication and media contacts, and working on communication related to conferences and other events. The role also involves close collaboration with other communicators at Umeå University and ongoing work with environmental monitoring and development of communication approaches. Work tasks may change over time as new tools, channels, and working methods develop and based on the units' needs. Required Qualifications: - Academic degree in media and communication science, plus current and several years of relevant (hands-on) communication experience - Experience with research or scientific communication, particularly summarizing research for the general public, authorities, and researchers in other fields - Strong ability to work in environments with multiple parallel assignments and target audiences - Ability to conduct environmental monitoring within research and society - Basic knowledge of legislation and guidelines relating to web and communication activities - Experience working with Office365 and relevant communication tools - Excellent ability to express yourself in speech and writing in Swedish and English Other Desirable Qualifications: - Experience with communication work at a university or higher education institution - Experience with communication or profiling work within research activities, particularly research centers and research infrastructure - Knowledge of or experience working with indigenous issues and/or knowledge of Sámi perspectives - Interest in and experience with environmental monitoring within research and societal issues - Experience working to highlight research and its societal importance Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
