JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The role of legal counsel at the Community Development Department is a varied job with great breadth. You will be part of the administrative department, which is a support function for the entire administration, and will serve as our internal support in legal matters, with responsibility for guiding employees primarily within the Planning and Building Act, the Environmental Code, the Food Act, and alcohol and tobacco legislation, as well as the Administrative Act, the Municipal Act, and the Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act. You need to be very familiar with legal language and skilled at searching, compiling, and evaluating legal information. You will also support the link between employees and the political level. You will participate where legal expertise is needed, including by quality-assuring and ensuring legal compliance of documents and projects, making decisions, representing the board in court proceedings, preparing legal investigations, responding to legislative inquiries, and educating employees and politicians in legal matters. You can drive and create engagement around the administration's legal issues and are accustomed to monitoring external developments. As part of the role, you may need to attend board and committee meetings in the evenings. QUALIFICATIONS We are looking for someone who has: • A law degree • Experience in public administration • Good knowledge of the legislation governing the Community Development Department's areas of responsibility, particularly the Planning and Building Act and environmental law, as well as good knowledge of administrative and municipal law • Experience with legal work including case management in a public administration, government agency, court, or other similar legal work experience that the employer considers equivalent. It is meritorious if you have specialized knowledge of the Environmental Code, the Food Act, and the Planning and Building Act, and if you have previous experience working in a politically governed organization. You have excellent ability to express yourself verbally and in writing, and are comfortable collaborating with others through a positive and flexible approach. You have the ability to organize, structure, and schedule work tasks efficiently, strategic thinking, and to monitor external developments within your area of responsibility. To succeed in this role, you need to be organized, thorough, and service-oriented, have good initiative, and be responsible. You work easily with your colleagues, municipal residents, and elected officials. You contribute to good teamwork and forward momentum in the workplace.
