Here the focus is on the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. At the clinic, patients are cared for by specially trained staff. At TIVA, advanced high-tech equipment is used such as ventilators, CVVHD, intra-aortic balloon pump (mechanical support for blood circulation), and ECMO (heart and lung machine for intensive care). Patients cared for at TIVA require intensive care following surgery of the heart, lungs, or blood vessels. The unit also cares for patients requiring specialist knowledge for acute or severe heart/lung failure and vascular problems. We have 6 care beds that are staffed around the clock. During this time, patients are monitored, diagnosed, and treated based on evidence-based and proven knowledge. At TIVA there is a professional team of anesthesiologists, surgeons, specialist nurses, nursing assistants, and physiotherapists. About the Operation The vascular-thoracic operational area encompasses three specialties: thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and thoracic anesthesia and intensive care. We provide highly specialized care in the form of heart and lung surgery, advanced vascular surgery with endovascular focus, arrhythmia surgery in various forms, as well as advanced intensive care including ECMO. Within the operational area, approximately 1,500 surgical procedures are performed each year. Our key overall goals are high quality and good accessibility with the patient at the center. Research and development are high priorities and are conducted in several areas. The operation is characterized by forward-thinking, teamwork, and good collaboration. The operational area consists of an operating department, a care ward with intermediate care beds, an intensive care unit, and an administrative unit. We are approximately 200 employees distributed among vascular surgeons, thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses (general, operating, anesthesia, and intensive care), nursing assistants, and medical care administrators. The size of the University Hospital and the operational area enables short decision-making paths and very effective collaboration around the patient.
